N. CHARLESTON, S.C. – In a topsy-turvy contest, the Winthrop women's basketball program used a second-quarter shutout to defeat Charleston Southern on the road Tuesday evening. The win was the first road victory of 2021-22 for the Eagles.
Winthrop (5-19, 3-10) | Charleston Southern (2-22, 2-11)
Feb. 15, 2022 | Buc Dome
Winthrop 56, Charleston Southern 43
How it Happened
First Quarter | Winthrop began the game on a 6-0 run as
Tori Hall,
Caroline De Klauman, and
Myra Strickland all got on the scoreboard. After two Buccaneer free throws, four points from De Klauman and Hall extended the visitors' lead to 10-2. Charleston Southern responded rather quickly with a 5-0 run and closed within a single possession once again at 12-9. Consecutive three pointers from Strickland and
Luka Malinka gave the Eagles some breathing room heading into the second period.
Second Quarter | The second quarter saw something incredible happen for Winthrop. Strickland hit another thre pointer to open the quarter and give the Eagles their first double-digit lead of the contest. A jumper from
Sydney Hunter, a three pointer from
Leonor Paisana, and a De Klauman layup prompted a Charleston Southern timeout with four minutes until halftime. Five more points from Strickland and a jumper from Hall extended the lead to 35-9 heading into the locker room as amazingly, the Buccaneers did not score in the stanza.
Third Quarter |
J'Mani Ingram's early free throw gave the Eagles their biggest lead of the contest at 36-9. However, Charleston Southern refused to go quietly into the night as the Buccaneers scored the next 17 points of the game to get back within ten. De Klauman and
Sierra Hunter stemmed the bleeding with scores, although Charleston Southern netted the last four points of the quarter to cut the lead to 40-30 with one period to go.
Fourth Quarter | The first few minutes of the final stanza saw little scoring as the Buccaneers scored four points to slash the lead to an astonishing six points with just less than six minutes on the clock. A free throw just 37 seconds later cut the lead to five before Malinka made a huge three pointer to extend the lead back to eight. Charleston Southern closed within six once again, but an Ingram layup and two Malinka free throws pushed the margin back to ten. A three pointer with 47 seconds left cut the Eagle lead to 50-43, but Malinka and Paisana combined for six free throws to provide the final margin.
