Eagles Fall To Florida A&M, North Florida On Day 2 Of River City Leadoff

Jacksonville, Fla. — Winthrop suffered a 4-3 loss to Florida A&M and 4-0 loss at North Florida, on day two of the River City Leadoff.

WHAT HAPPENED
vs. Florida A&M
  • For the second time in three games the Eagles grabbed the lead in the first
  • Macy McCall doubled to center with one out and then stole third
  • McCall scored when Kaitlyn Tucker reached on a fielding error
  • The Rattlers responded in the bottom half of the first with two runs courtesy of a two-run double by Nyah Morgan
  • In the top of the third the Eagles took the lead
  • Lauren Hutcherson led off with a double down the right field line and advance to third on a wild pitch
  • Two batters later Paige Rivas reached on a fielding error to put runners at the corner
  • Rivas stole second and moved to third on an errant throw from the catcher, which also allowed Hutcherson to score from third
  • Rivas then scored on an RBI groundout to second base from McCall
  • Morgan delivered again for the Rattlers in the 5th with a two out RBI double to left to tie the game at 3-3
  • Eagles had a chance to take the lead in the top of the seventh as Bailey Warren walked with one out to get things going
  • Courtney Cygan followed with a single through the left side
  • Two batters later Hutcherson drew a two out walk to load the bases
  • While pinch-hitter Mackenzie Smith was at the plate, Florida A&M's pitcher Chris'Deona Beasley threw a pitch wide of the plate as Warren broke for home
  • The ball was fielded cleanly by catcher Natasha Fox and flipped back to Beasley covering home plate as she applied the tag to get Warren sliding into home
  • The Rattlers loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the seventh
  • Reese Basinger got a grounder to second as Cygan fielded and came home with the throw for the force out but the throw was just off the mark and the run scored before Warren could collect it
  • In her collegiate debut, Basinger allowed four runs (two earned) on seven hits with one walk and seven strikeouts in a complete game effort

at North Florida
  • The game was scoreless until the bottom of the 5th when the Ospreys pushed three across with two outs
  • It started with a one out walk by Bailee Aguigui, who then stole second two batters later
  • Following the steal, Kayla Harper singled through the hole on the left side, scoring Aguigui for a 1-0 lead
  • Then Kayla McGory took a 3-2 pitch to left for a two-run shot and 3-0 lead
  • North Florida added another run in the sixth
  • Winthrop threatened in the second inning when Cygan reached on an error and then stole second
  • Cygan moved to third on a ground out but the threat ended as Vianna Rodriguez worked the count full before flying out to right
  • After falling behind 3-0 in the 5th, the Eagles came right back in the top of the sixth trying to dig into the UNF lead
  • Ashton Vanhouse led off the 6th with a single up the middle followed by a single to the pitcher off the bat of Paige Rivas
  • The next three batters were unable to move the runners as both were stranded
  • Cygan singled in the 7th and stole second to get in scoring position but was stranded
  • Sydney Boulware took the loss in the circle as she allowed three runs on four hits with three walks and four strikeouts in 4.2 innings

EXTRA BASES
  • Cygan got her first two collegiate hits and first two stolen bases over the two games
  • McCall had one stolen base on the day as she now has 63 in her career and is also closing in on 100 career runs with (87)
