Box Score 2 Jacksonville, Fla. — Winthrop softball opened the season with close losses to North Carolina State and Western Carolina, Friday afternoon at the River City Leadoff.

WHAT HAPPENED
vs. N.C. State
- Eagles struck early with two runs in the bottom of the first
- Paige Rivas led things off drawing a walk on a full count and moved to second on a Macy McCall single
- Kaitlyn Tucker sacrificed to move the runners over one base
- Lauren King stepped in and lined out to second on the first pitch
- Then the Eagles took advantage of a miscue by N.C. State as Rivas scored on a wild pitch and McCall sped around to score for the 2-0 lead
- The Wolfpack scored three runs in the top of the sixth inning
- N.C. State cut the deficit in half on an RBI single up the middle by Taylor Johnson
- Then Johnson stole second but two errant throws by Winthrop allowed two runs to score as the Wolfpack took a 3-2 lead
- Eagles threatened in the bottom half of the sixth as Tucker led off reaching base after she was hit by a pitch
- Then King was hit by a pitch to put two runners on with no outs
- N.C. State made a pitching change to Maddie McPherson as she struck out two and got a ground out to end the game
vs. Western Carolina
- Eagles put a runner in scoring position in the top of the first as McCall reached on an error with one out and then stole second for her first steal of the season
- Tucker struck out and then King grounded out to short to end the threat
- In the top of the third, Lauren Hutcherson led off the inning with a walk
- Two batters later Paige Rivas singled to short, putting two runners on
- Tucker drew a two-out walk to load the bases but King flied out to center to end the top half
- The Catamounts took a 1-0 lead in the third inning on a ground out to second base
- Western Carolina added two more runs in the fifth as Savannah Rice hit a solo shot with one out and later in the inning Brooklynn Brewington stole home
- Eagles had another chance to get on the board in the sixth inning when King singled to right center with two outs
- Lauren Daniels was hit by a pitch to put two runners on but Mackenzie Smith popped up to short to end the threat
EXTRA BASES
- In the two games on the day the Eagles left 11 runners on base
- Isabella Clark made her first collegiate start
- Lauren Hutcherson, Courtney Cygan, Ella McGalliard all made their Winthrop debuts and started at least one game
- Sydney Boulware started the season opener as she finished with a complete game in her collegiate debut allowing three runs (2 earned) on three hits with three walks and five strikeouts
- In fact, Boulware struck out the first two batters she faced and three in the first inning alone
- Lauren Daniels and Reese Basinger also made their collegiate debuts
- Paige Rivas, Tucker, and King all reached base in both games
- McCall had one stolen base on the day as she now has 62 in her career and is also closing in on 100 career runs with (86)
