Eagles Pick Up Second Win On The Season Against SC State

ROCK HILL, S.C. –Winthrop picked up their second win of the year by beating South Carolina State by a score of 61-38 Saturday afternoon at the Winthrop Coliseum.

How it Happened
 
First Quarter | Winthrop started the game up 5-2 more than two minutes in on a three-pointer by Shamyjha Price and a hoop plus the foul by Paige Powell. The visitors would add a basket before the first media timeout, making the score 5-4 Winthrop. Coming out of the timeout, SC State hit a free throw to tie the game at five only for Ally Ross to score a jumper in the paint to give Winthrop a 7-5 lead with nearly three minutes left. Powell would then hit a layup a minute later for a 9-5 Eagle lead. The Bulldogs answered with a score but Jada Ryce would tack on her first points of the afternoon on the next play to give Winthrop an 11-7 lead with nearly a minute remaining. Price would then hit a three-pointer with 11 seconds left to increase Winthrop's lead to 14-7. The visitors concluded the quarter with a layup at the buzzer to trail 14-9 entering the second quarter.
 
Second Quarter | Ross gave Winthrop a 16-9 lead to start the second quarter on a fastbreak layup before the visitors answered with a two of their own on the next play. Aaishah Barry restored the Eagle lead to seven on a layup with nearly eight minutes left immediately following the Bulldogs score. Two minutes later Barry hit both free throws for a 20-11 lead at the media timeout. Coming out of the timeout Ryce hit a jumper as the shot clock expired to give Winthrop a double-digit lead at 22-11. The visitors struck back with a three-pointer on the next possession but Frances Brown scored her first points of the game on a jumper in the lane to give Winthrop a 24-14 lead with less than four minutes to go. The two teams would trade baskets for the rest of the frame and eventually Winthrop went into the locker room up 30-22.
 
Third Quarter | Winthrop scored the first six points of the second half, forcing SC State to call for time almost three minutes in with Price making two free throws and Powell making two baskets. Powell's second score during the run gave Winthrop a 36-22 lead at the eight minute mark. Coming out of the timeout, Price scored on a fastbreak layup for a 38-22 lead, forcing SC State to call another timeout. Powell then hit two free throws to give the Eagles an 18-point lead before the visitors ended the 10-0 Winthrop run with a jumper inside of seven minutes. The Eagles eventually seized a 21-point lead at 47-26 with less than two minutes left after a jumper in the paint by Ryce. Winthrop held the Bulldogs to only six points in the quarter, entering the fourth with a 47-28 lead.
 
Fourth Quarter | The teams combined to score only five points in the first four minutes of the fourth. Price stopped the scoring drought for both squads on a triple, giving Winthrop a 53-30 lead with less than six minutes left. The Eagles would eventually went on to win by that same margin, 61-38.

After a long exam break, Winthrop will journey to the Sunshine State for the second and final time this season for the Hatter Classic in DeLand, FL against host Stetson University on Sunday, Dec. 18 at 11:00 a.m. The Eagles will then face Bethune-Cookman the next day at 1:00 p.m.
