DELAND, Fla. –Winthrop fell to Bethune-Cookman by a score of 67-54 Sunday afternoon in Winthrop's first game of the Hatter Classic on the Stetson University campus.

How it Happened
First Quarter | Winthrop started the game up 4-0 nearly two minutes in on layups by
Leonor Paisana and
Jada Ryce before the Wildcats scored nine straight points. During the BC run, the Eagles failed to score for nearly three minutes until
Ally Ross stopped the drought with a three-pointer with less than six minutes left in the frame.
Tori Hall then tied it at nine on the next play only to have the Wildcats regain the lead on a layup. Hall tied it again on a layup coming out of a timeout but two triples and two free throws gave BC a 19-11 lead with less than three minutes left. Trailing by eight, Winthrop reeled off a 5-0 run to cut the deficit to 19-16 on Ross's second triple of the frame and a Hall jumper to cut the deficit to 19-16 with nearly a minute to go. The Wildcats then got a layup on their next offensive possession to make it 21-16 BC entering the second quarter.
Second Quarter |
Paige Powell and Ryce got the Eagles on the board first to start the second on two free throws each to make it 21-20 BC. The Wildcats would go on a 6-0 run, giving them a 27-20 lead with nearly seven minutes left.
Aaishah Barry then got on the stat sheet with two free throws coming out of a timeout to make it a five-point game at 27-22. A free throw by the Wildcats made it 28-22 only to have Powell make a free throw of her own. After a BC score,
Frances Brown went on a personal 5-0 run to cut it to 30-28 with less than three minutes left. Two more free throws by the Wildcats made it 32-28 BC but a Powell layup made it a one-possession game at 32-30. BC would then make four free throws to restore their six-point edge inside of a minute. The teams then split the last four points with the Wildcats taking a 38-32 lead into the locker room.
Third Quarter | The Wildcats started the second half with two layups for a 41-32 lead before two Powell free throws made it a seven-point game with seven minutes left. BC then hit another layup on the next play to restore their nine-point lead before Ryce scored on a layup to cut it to seven with six minutes left. This was the Eagles first field goal of the second half. After a free throw by BC made it 44-36, Ryce scored on a jumper and got fouled. The ensuing free throw cut the deficit to 44-39 with nearly five minutes left, forcing the Wildcats to call a timeout. BC answered with a layup only to have
Shamyjha Price get her first points of the afternoon on a layup to make it a five-point game again. After another BC score, Ross hit a three-pointer and Brown hit a free throw to make it 48-45 Wildcats with less than four minutes to go but six straight points by the Wildcats gave them a nine-point lead at 54-45 lead with less than two minutes left. Ryce cut it to seven with a layup immediately following the BC score. The Wildcats made it a nine-point game again on the next play before Ryce concluded the scoring for both team for the frame on a layup with 12 seconds left to make it 56-49 Wildcats headed into the final quarter.
Fourth Quarter | Winthrop came out swinging to start the final quarter by scoring five straight points and forcing BC to call for time two minutes in. Powell hit a bucket and a free throw while Ryce got a layup. But the Eagles would not score again, as the Wildcats went on an 11-0 run to end the game.
