Winthrop (2-9) | Stetson (6-7)
Dec. 19, 2022 | J. Ollie Edmunds Center
Winthrop 38, Stetson 53
How it Happened
First Quarter | Winthrop started out hot, going up 9-1 on consecutive baskets by
Jada Ryce, a jumper from
Tori Hall and a triple from
Leonor Paisana. Paisana's shot from deep came more than three minutes in. But Winthrop's next and final score of the quarter didn't come until inside of a minute, a nearly six minute scoring drought that ended when
Ally Ross hit a jumper to make it 11-8 Winthrop. Stetson would close the frame with a 9-2 run after being down 9-1, leaving the Eagles with an 11-10 entering the second quarter. Winthrop led for the entire quarter, the only time they would lead for the game.
Second Quarter | The Eagles would score only five points in the second quarter, compared to Stetson's 16. The quarter started with a bucket plus the foul for the Hatters to go up 13-11 at the 8:39 mark. Ryce would tie the game for the last time nearly a minute later on a jumper. The Hatters would then get four straight points only to have Ross nail a three-pointer to make it 17-16 Stetson with less than five minutes remaining. But that's as close as the Eagles would get for the rest of the game as the Hatters finished the half with a 9-0 run to take a 26-16 lead into the locker room.
Third Quarter | The two teams split the first eight points to start the second half with Winthrop's scores being jumpers by
Paige Powell and
Shamyjha Price. Price's jumper came at the 7:34 mark with Winthrop trailing 30-20. Stetson then responded with an 11-5 run to take a 16-point lead at 41-25 with nearly two minutes left. Winthrop's only scores during the run were a layup by Price and an old-fashioned three-point play by Powell. The Eagles would then score five of the next seven points to enter the final quarter down 43-30.
Fourth Quarter | The Eagles started the fourth quarter with a layup by Hall nine seconds in only to have the Hatters score the next five points to restore their 16-point edge at 48-32 with nearly seven minutes left. Winthrop would then score the next six points on three free throws by Powell and a triple by Price to make it a 10-point game with less than three minutes to go in hopes of sparking a miraculous comeback. But it wasn't to be as Stetson scored the final five points of the contest to win 53-38.
