ROCK HILL, S.C. – Fueled by a defense that held the opposition to just two field goals in the first half, Winthrop defeated St. Andrew's by a score of 60-29 Wednesday night at the Winthrop Coliseum to pick up their first win on the season.

How it Happened
First Quarter | Winthrop started the game with a 4-0 lead nearly two minutes into the game off layups by
Tori Hall and
Jada Ryce before two free throws by the Knights cut it to 4-2. However, that's as close as the opposition would get for the rest of the game as the Eagles went on a 7-0 run to take an 11-2 lead at the under-5 media timeout, capped off by an
Ally Ross triple. The visitors would hit a three-pointer several plays later to cut it to 11-5 with three minutes left but would not score for 11 minutes. An 8-0 run would give Winthrop a 19-8 lead heading into the second quarter.
Second Quarter | The Eagles picked up where they left off at the end of the first quarter, going on a 10-0 run to start the second. The run was capped off by another Ross triple with nearly four minutes left to take a 29-5 lead. The visitors finally ended their long field goal drought with a jumper in the lane with two minutes to go, making it 29-7 Eagles. Winthrop would then close the half with three free throws to take a 32-7 lead into the break.
Third Quarter | The Eagles scored the first four points of the second half on jumpers by
Leonor Paisana and
Shamyjha Price to take a 36-7 lead with less than eight minutes left. But Winthrop would not score for five minutes as the visitors would hit a three-pointer to make it 36-10 Winthrop with less than four minutes to go. Ross and Hall would end the drought with four quick points to give the Eagles a 40-10 edge with nearly a minute left. St. Andrew's would hit two more field goals for the rest of the frame while Winthrop hit four three throws to take a 44-16 into the fourth quarter.
Fourth Quarter | Winthrop would start the fourth quarter with an 11-2 run to seize their largest lead of the game at 55-18 on a Ross three-pointer with seven minutes left. The visitors then scored seven straight points to make it a 30-point deficit with nearly four minutes to go. Ross then went on a little run by herself with five straight to make it 60-25 inside of three minutes. The visitors would get two more field goals to end the scoring for both teams as the Eagles went on to win 60-29.
