Eagles Fall To UNCG At Home

ROCK HILL, S.C. – Winthrop fell to UNC Greensboro by a score of 75-52 Sunday afternoon at the Winthrop Coliseum.

How it Happened
 
First Quarter | Trailing 3-0 early, Leonor Paisana hit one from deep to tie it at three one minute into the game and Jada Ryce hit a jumper in the lane on the next Winthrop offensive possession to give the Eagles a 5-3 lead. UNCG would seize the lead a few plays later on a layup and two free throws only for Ryce to hit a three-pointer for an 8-7 lead. After a 5-0 run by the visitors, Winthrop scored five of their own on a three by Ally Ross and a Ryce jumper to tie it at 13 with less than four minutes left. The Spartans would then score five of the next eight points for an 18-15 lead inside of two minutes. Winthrop would cut it to one on a pair of free throws before the visitors hit a three with 13 seconds remaining but Ross banked in a three-pointer at the horn to leave the Eagles down 21-20 heading into the second quarter.   
 
Second Quarter | The Spartans would score eight of the first ten points to start the second quarter, taking a 29-22 lead with less than seven minutes to go. Tori Hall got in on the action with a jumper to stop the UNCG run a minute later to cut it to 29-24 but the visitors would then hit three consecutive three-pointers for a fourteen point lead at 38-24 with nearly two minutes left. Winthrop would responded with four quick points on a Ryce jumper and two Ross free throws to make it a ten point deficit at 38-28 with a minute to go. UNCG concluded the scoring for the half with a layup on the next possession and going into halftime with a 40-28 lead.   
 
Third Quarter | Trailing 42-28, consecutive baskets by Shamyjha Price and Hall made it a ten point game nearly two minutes in. After a free throw by UNCG, Ryce stole the ball and scored on the fastbreak to make it 43-34 Spartans with six minutes left. UNCG would then score four of the next five points to lead by 12 at 47-35 with less than five minutes to go. Winthrop would answer with a 6-3 run via consecutive old-fashioned three-point plays by Price and Ryce to cut it to eight at 50-42 with nearly three minutes left but UNCG scored six straight to restore their double-digit lead at 56-42 with time nearly gone at the end of the period. Ryce would then a free throw to make it 56-43 UNCG heading into the final quarter.   
 
Fourth Quarter | The Spartans started out the fourth quarter with a 7-0 run to take a twenty point lead at 63-43 more than two minutes in before the Eagles scored six of the next ten points on two straight three-pointers by Price and Ryce to make it 67-49 UNCG inside of six minutes. The visitors would then hit a jumper and three free throws, two of them technical to take a twenty three point edge a minute later. Paige Powell would hit a jumper to make it 72-51 in favor of the Spartans with less than four minutes left before UNCG hit a three to seize their largest lead of the contest at 75-51 on their next offensive possession. Price would then hit a free throw to cut it to twenty three points with nearly two minutes left to conclude the scoring on the afternoon for both teams as UNCG went on to win it 75-52.
