How it Happened

First Quarter | Winthrop started the game down 5-0 before Jada Ryce scored on a tough jumper just outside the paint to get the Eagles on the board almost two minutes in. This started a small 7-3 run to make it 8-7 GSU with six minutes left in the period, capped off by a fastbreak layup by Shamyjha Price. Leonor Paisana also hit one from deep during the run. This would be the closest Winthrop would come all game as the Panthers closed the quarter with an 11-2 run to take an 18-9 lead into the second frame.

Second Quarter | The Panthers would continue their run, taking a 28-9 lead before the Eagles scored five straight points on free throws by Paisana and a free throw and a layup by Paige Powell to make it 28-14 in favor of the home team with four minutes left in the half. After a layup by Georgia State, the Eagles finished the half strong with a 7-5 run to trail 35-21 entering the locker room. Paisana accounted for four free throws during the run.

Third Quarter | Like the second quarter, Georgia State again came out hot with an 8-0 run to take a 22 point lead three minutes in before Tori Hall and Price scored to cut it to 45-25 with less than six minutes left in the quarter. Ryce would score twice more in the frame including a jumper to make it 59-24 with two minutes remaining. Paisana capped off Winthrop's scoring for the quarter with a fastbreak layup as the Panthers scored four more points to take a 58-31 lead into the final quarter.

Fourth Quarter | Winthrop outscored the Panthers 14-10 in the fourth quarter with Ally Ross and Ryce combined to score nine of those points. Ryce's layup got Winthrop's scoring started in the fourth with a layup thirty seconds in to make it 60-33. After the Panthers hit a triple to seize their largest lead of the game a few plays later, Ross went coast-to-coast to make it 63-35 with seven minutes left. Ryce duplicated Ross's feat on the next play to make it 63-37 with five minutes to go. After another Georgia State score from deep, Powell hit a layup with less than four minutes left to make it 66-39. The Panthers then got one last score with two and a half minutes remaining to make it 68-39. Winthrop would score the final four points of the contest on consecutive threes by Paisana and Ross.
