How it Happened

First Quarter | Winthrop started the game down 2-0 before a layup by Shamyjha Price tied it at 2. WVU went up 7-2 before an 8-0 run gave the Eagles their only lead of the game at 10-7 with six and half minutes remaining. During the run, Price, Paige Powell, Leonor Paisana and Jada Ryce each had two points. Ryce capped it off with a jumper in the lane. A 9-2 run by WVU ended the quarter with Winthrop trailing 16-12 with the only Eagle points being a Paisana jumper in the paint.

Second Quarter | The Mountaineers jumped out to a 14-point lead at 26-12 with less than five minutes remaining before Powell scored to make it 26-14. That started a small Winthrop rally to end the half, outscoring WVU 7-4 with Powell scoring half of the Eagle points during the rally. Ryce ended the run with a jumper with two seconds left in the period as Winthrop went into the break trailing 30-19.

Third Quarter | Winthrop again found themselves trailing by 14 before Paisana scored to make it 33-21 a minute into the second half. After a WVU three pointer, Price answered with a three of her own. WVU continued to hold a lead of around 17 points for the rest of the quarter. Price, Powell, Ryce and Aaishah Barry would each score two points following Price's triple. Barry's jumper with 42 seconds left in the period made it 47-34 in favor of the home team. WVU then hit a three to enter the final period up 50-34.

Fourth Quarter | Down 18 early in the fourth quarter, a Powell layup made it 52-36 WVU with eight minutes left in the game. After another Mountaineer triple, Paisana hit one from downtown to make it a 16-point deficit at 55-39 one minute later. Powell would then score a layup to make it 57-41 with less than six minutes remaining. But that's as close as the Eagles would get the rest of the way as the Mountaineers seized a 25-point lead inside of a minute, their largest of the contest. The only Winthrop points to end the game after getting it to a 16-point deficit were jumpers from Price and Ryce and a three-pointer from Price with 27 seconds left to make it 70-48.
