ROCK HILL, S.C. – Winthrop fell to Coppin State 78-49 Sunday afternoon in the Eagles home opener at the Winthrop Coliseum.

How it Happened
First Quarter | After falling behind 2-0,
Jada Ryce's jumper tied it at 2 with two minutes gone by in the period.
Shamyjha Price then hit a jumper to cut it to 5-4. But the Eagles didn't score for three minutes until
Paige Powell hit a jumper to make it 10-6. Powell would also tack on a free throw to cut it to 10-7. With three minutes left in the quarter a brief scuffle stopped action for 10-15 minutes in which four players combined were ejected and resulted in the Eagles fielding five players for the rest of the contest. Winthrop's only other scores of the quarter were two free throws and a jumper by Price. At the end of the period the Eagles trailed 23-11.
Second Quarter | The Eagles first score of the period was a jumper by Price and the foul to make it 25-17 CSU.
Ally Ross then started her career day with a jumper with less than six minutes to go in the half to make it 28-19 CSU. Price added a layup a couple of plays later to cut it to seven. But that's as close as the Eagles would get for the rest of the game. Winthrop's final score of the period was Ross's first triple of the game to make it 36-24 in favor of the visitors with almost a minute left in the half. Winthrop would go into the locker room trailing 39-24.
Third Quarter | Winthrop would only score 10 points in the third quarter as the visitors took a 22 point lead. Price and Ross led the way with four points apiece. Ross's points were two jumpers and Price also hit a jumper and two free throws.
Leonor Paisana got in the action by scoring a jumper with six and a half minutes left in the period to cut CSU's lead to 17 at 46-29. Entering the final period, Winthrop trailed 55-34.
Fourth Quarter | Winthrop started the final period with a jumper by Price to make it 55-36 CSU. Ross then hit her second three of the game with seven and a half minutes left to make it 61-39. Price would hit two free throws a few plays later to make it 68-41. CSU would then seize their largest lead of the game at 78-46 with less than a minute remaining in the game. Ross would hit one more triple to end the scoring for the afternoon, as Winthrop dropped their third straight contest to start the season.
