Two Straight Wins For Eagles After 1-0 Road Win Over Asheville

Asheville, N.C. – Winthrop men's soccer recorded its second straight shutout victory, defeating UNC Asheville 1-0 on the road Saturday evening.

Game Recap
  • Bulldogs had a couple of chances in the early going but Gareth Shaw stood tall making two saves
  • Winthrop grabbed the early lead in the 8th minute as Stefan Sildor won a foot race to a long ball, dribbled into the box from out wide and passed in front of goal to Ben Goodman who place a shot into the net first time
  • In the 21st minute the Bulldogs appeared to tie the match as Sam Presser headed home a cross but was whistled for offside
  • Grayson Woodard just missed the top corner on a shot from about 25 yards out in the 39th minute
  • In the 59th minute the Eagles served a free kick into the box that was punched away by A.J. Bengds away from goal and collected by Aiden Williams but he could quite square his body enough as he turned and fired a shot high over the bar
  • In the 69th minute Brendan Herb had a good look inside the box as he fired a shot to the lower right corner but Sean Green was there to deflect the shot away for a corner

Notables
  • The Bulldogs finished with a 24-9 advantage in total shots and 7-4 in shots on goal
  • Shaw, who was tested a couple of times, finished with seven saves to earn his second collegiate shutout
  • Asheville also held a 5-3 edge in corners
  • Eagles have back-to-back shutouts against league opponents for the first time since 2015

Looking Ahead
Eagles are back home for a non-conference matchup on Tuesday, Oct. 18 at 6 p.m. when they host the College of Charleston.
