Volleyball Falls To Campbell Saturday Afternoon

Buies Creek, N.C. – Winthrop suffered a 3-0 loss at Campbell, Saturday afternoon in Big South Conference volleyball action.

How it Happened
 
Set 1 | Avery Jolley started off the match with a kill to give the Eagles the first lead. There were six lead changes in the early going as the set was tied 6-6 after a kill by Campbell's Aley Clent. The Camels pushed their lead to 9-6 and 10-7 but the Eagles bounced back to cut the deficit to one at 10-9 after a service ace by Alicia Davis. Following a kill by Alayna Jansky to pull within one again at 11-10, Campbell scored three straight points, forcing Winthrop to call timeout. Out of the timeout Campbell pushed the run to 5-0 for a 16-10 lead. Campbell led 19-12 as the Eagles tried to claw their way back. Winthrop scored six of the next eight points to pull within 21-18, forcing a Campbell timeout. Out of the timeout the Eagles scored two straight points to make it a 21-20 lead for Campbell. The Eagles eventually tied the set at 22-22 on a Madison Gorniak service ace. After a kill by Melody Paige, put Campbell back up 23-22, kills by Jolley and Jansky pushed Winthrop into the lead and forced another Campbell timeout. In the end the Camels held off the Eagles to take the set 27-25. Jolley led all players with six kills in the opening set while Jansky and Brookelynn Thomas had three.
 
Set 2 | Campbell jumped out to an early 6-2 lead thanks to a 3-0 run. Eagles cut the deficit in half at 7-5, but the Camels went on another 3-0 run for a 10-5 advantage. The Eagles called timeout and out of the break Jolley put an end to the run with a kill. Following that kill the Camels scored four of the next five points to push the lead to 14-7 as the Eagles called another timeout. This time out of the break the Eagles scored three straight with kills from Jolley, Jansky and Thomas to pull within four points. Campbell responded with a 6-2 run to open up a 20-12 lead and went on to take the set 25-14. Thomas led the team with four kills.
 
Set 3 | Jolley started off the set with a kill and behind two kills from Alicia Roberts the Eagles jumped out to a 4-1 lead. Winthrop led 6-3 after a service ace by Jolley and then pushed the lead to 9-5 following a Jansky kill. The teams traded points on the next four possessions until a 4-0 run by Campbell tied the set at 11-11 as Winthrop called timeout. The set was tied again at 14-14 after another ace from Jolley. Campbell scored three straight points and four of the next five to open up an 18-15 advantage. Thomas came through with a kill to cut the deficit to 18-17, but Campbell finished off the set on a 7-1 run to take the match.
