Jansky's 14 Kills Leads Eagles Win Over Gardner-Webb

Rock Hill, S.C. – Alayna Jansky had a match-high 14 kills to lead Winthrop to a 3-0 victory against Gardner-Webb, Friday evening in Big South Conference volleyball action.

How it Happened
 
Set 1 | Eagles raced out to a 4-0 lead behind kills from Avery Jolley, Alicia Davis and Brookelynn Thomas. Winthrop pushed its lead to 6-1 and then 8-2. Eagles took an 11-3 lead with a 3-0 spurt as Karli Shepherd had back-to-back kills and then Thomas with an ace. The lead grew to double-digits at 15-5 after another 3-0 run. A 4-0 run highlighted by kills from Alayna Jansky and Thomas put the Eagles on top 20-8. Winthrop went on to take the set 25-12 as it finished with a .500 hitting percentage. Jansky and Shepherd led the way with four kills each.
 
Set 2 | Gardner-Webb jumped out to an early 3-1 lead and then led 4-2 after a kill by Delaney McCullough. The Eagles reeled off five straight points that started with a block by Thomas and Shepherd followed. After an ace by Thomas, Isabella Murray and Alicia Roberts gave the Eagles a 5-4 lead with a block. Thomas served another ace followed by another block by Roberts and Murray for a 7-4 lead. The Runnin' Bulldogs scored 11 of the next 13 points to take a 15-8 lead. Winthrop fought back and closed the gap to 17-15 after a kill by Jansky, forcing a Gardner-Webb timeout. Out of the break the Eagles cut the deficit to one after a Jansky kill. Winthrop tied the set at 18-18 after a block by Thomas and Shepherd and then took the lead on an attacking error. Gardner-Webb scored three straight to regain the lead at 21-19 as Winthrop called timeout. A kill by Shepherd followed by an ace from Thomas tied it at 21-21. Then a kill by Roberts and Shepherd had the Eagles in front 23-21. The Eagles held on to take the set 25-23 as Roberts and Riley Oglevie clinched it with a block. Winthrop had six blocks in the set and Shepherd had a team-high four kills.
 
Set 3 | Gardner-Webb scored the first point of the set, but the Eagles scored five straight for a 5-1 lead. The Eagles pushed the lead to 8-2 with a 3-0 run. Then a 4-0 run put the Eagles on top 12-3. The lead extended to double-digits at 15-5 after back-to-back kills by Roberts and Jansky. Winthrop went on to score eight of the final 11 points to clinch the match by taking the set 25-16. Jansky led the team with seven kills in the set.
