Jan. 23, 2022 | Willett Hall
Longwood 85, Winthrop 58
How it Happened
First Quarter | Longwood started off well with a 7-2 lead before consecutive
J'Mani Ingram layups cut the lead to a single point. The Lancers scored consecutive baskets of their own to regain a five-point lead.
Sierra Hunter converted a layup of her own, but Longwood quickly extended their lead to 16-8. Winthrop continued to play hard, but back-to-back-to-back three pointers from the Lancers gave the home team a 25-13 lead. The Eagles then went on a 7-0 run, capped off by a
Leonor Paisana three pointer, to close out the first period.
Second Quarter | The teams went back and forth early with a Hunter layup keeping Winthrop within four points at 30-26. However, the Lancers came back with an 11-0 run that included three three pointers to seize control of the contest. The Eagles got the game back to single digits on a three pointer from
Myra Strickland before Longwood scored the final two points of the half to go into the locker room with an eleven-point lead.
Third Quarter | The Lancers quickly extended their lead to 52-36 on yet another three pointer. Winthrop stayed within 13 when Ingram made back-to-back layups, but Longwood continued to press the accelerator and took a 60-42 lead heading into the final stanza.
Fourth Quarter | Winthrop continued to play hard and fight, but it just wasn't enough. The teams scored back and forth for several minutes as the Lancers took a 68-49 lead with just less than six minutes to play in the contest. A Strickland free throw kept the margin at eighteen points at 70-52, but Longwood quickly extended the lead to 77-52 and cruised to the finish line from there.
