North Carolina A&T 87, Winthrop 64
How it Happened
First Quarter | Winthrop got off to an excellent start as
Luka Malinka made a three pointer to give the Eagles an early advantage. The Aggies ran off five consecutive points before a
Sierra Hunter layup stemmed the bleeding. The teams see-sawed back and forth; then the Aggies made a three pointer shortly before the buzzer for a three-point lead hitting into the second quarter.
Second Quarter | The Eagles converted a layup to close the deficit to one, but A&T went on another 5-0 run for a six-point lead. Malinka made another three pointer to close the gap before the Aggies scored eleven consecutive points for a double-digit lead. Winthrop continued to play hard and a
Tori Hall jumper with 21 seconds left in the period kept the visitors within nine points heading into the locker room.
Third Quarter | A&T scored the first four points of the second half to regain their double-digit lead and extended the lead to a game-high 17 points a little less than halfway through the quarter. The margin stayed around that number for a couple minutes, but the lead ballooned to 22 with just over two minutes to play. A layup from the home team with two seconds left gave A&T a 65-40 lead.
Fourth Quarter | Although Winthrop continued to play hard, North Carolina A&T kept a large lead and extended it to 30 with eight minutes to play. The Eagles scored the last five points of the contest with Malinka hitting a buzzer-beating three pointer to provide the final margin.
