Eagles Battle Hard In Home Loss To Campbell

ROCK HILL, S.C. – Winthrop battled hard and was within single digits for most of the first half, but a strong second half performance from Campbell gave the visitors a decisive 77-54 victory Wednesday evening inside the Winthrop Coliseum.

Winthrop (2-12, 0-3) | Campbell (11-3, 5-0)
Jan. 19, 2022 | Winthrop Coliseum

Campbell 77, Winthrop 54

How it Happened
First Quarter | Campbell made consecutive three pointers to take an early 6-0 lead. A layup from Sierra Hunter cut into the deficit, but the Camels came back with their third three pointer of the half for a seven point lead. The Eagles then went on a 9-0 run, capped off by a Myra Strickland triple, to take their first lead of the evening at 11-9. Campbell went on an 11-0 run to seize the lead back before Strickland's short jumper cut the lead to 20-13 at the end of the first period.

Second Quarter | The Camels made yet another three pointer to open the second stanza, but a 6-0 run from the Eagles slashed the lead to four points. Campbell made a three pointer to expand the margin, although Winthrop battled to within one possession on a Sierra Hunter layup. The Camels expanded the margin to eight before Strickland splashed in a triple, but Campbell hit a three of their own just before the half for a 36-28 lead heading into the locker room.

Third Quarter | The visitors made consecutive triples out of the halftime break to quickly take a 14 point lead. Winthrop made consecutive baskets to cut the lead to ten, but Campbell kept up the offensive barrage and kept a double-digit lead, extending it to 50-34 with just less than two minutes left in the quarter. The margin stayed at 16 until the buzzer with the Camels leading 54-38.

Fourth Quarter | Both teams traded buckets early on in the final period, but Campbell continued to play well and gradually extended the lead to 61-42 with just less than seven minutes to play. The Eagles refused to fold and scored five consecutive points to cut the lead to 14 with five and a half minutes to play before the Camels pulled away to provide the final margin.
