Game Recap
- Eagles struck first in the 9th minute as Jonathan Foster netted his first goal of the season
- Jayden Mace cross a ball on the ground as Brigham Larsen made a run at the near post, but let the ball continue as Foster tried to redirect the ball on frame as a defender stepped in for a tackle and the ball immediately popped out in front of Foster and he buried it in the net
- Winthrop had a good chance to double its lead in the 18th minute when Foster won the ball just inside the top of the 18, dribbled to the line and crossed in front as Suhong Jung ran on in front but his shot was blocked by a Furman defender sliding in front
- Great chance for Furman in the 23rd minute when Jake Raine stole the ball around midfield and dribbled with speed toward the Winthrop goal creating a 1v1 situation but Sam Bell stood tall and saved the shot by Raine
- Furman equalized in the 39th minute as the Eagles were unable to clear the ball and Miles Fenton served a ball to the back post where Alfredo Diaz-Santillan was unmarked and he headed the cross into the top left corner
- Winthrop had a chance to regain the lead in the 43rd minute as Ethan Stevenson played a give-and-go as he dribbled on toward goal from an angle and tried to slip a shot by the keeper but Ben Roberts made the save leading to a corner kick
- In the final seconds of the half Stevenson received a back pass and let a shot fly from about 25 yards out that was struck well but Roberts had it covered for the save
- Brigham Larsen put the Eagles back in front in the 58th minute when Taeyoon Oh knocked a long ball over the top of the Furman defense and Larsen chased it down and calmly placed the ball over the keeper's head and into the open goal
- In the 70th minute, Diaz-Santillan dribbled across the top of the box and fired a shot to the left corner that was tipped away by Bell for a corner
- In the 77th minute, Foster played a ball in the box that found its way into open space as Stevenson ran on but the Roberts just dove and poked it away at the last second to take away the good opportunity for a third goal
- Larsen tried to make it a two goal lead in the 88th minute as he fired a shot from about 25 yards out that just missed right of the post
- Conor Stephens tried for 4th goal as he fired a shot from the top of the box that was just tipped over the bar by Roberts in the 90th minute
Notables
- For the first time this season the Eagles scored the first goal of the game
- This is the first time the Eagles have defeated Furman in nine meetings all-time
- Furman was voted 2nd in the Southern Conference, behind UNC Greensboro (Winthrop's next opponent)
- Larsen had the first two-goal performance by a Winthrop freshmen since Cameron Thayer had two against College of Charleston on Sept. 25, 2019 in a 3-2 win in double overtime
- Bell finished with four saves on the night while Roberts had five
- Furman had a 14-13 edge in shots while the Eagles had an 8-5 advantage in shots on goal
Looking Ahead
The next contest for the Eagles will be their home opener on Saturday, Sept. 11 at 7 p.m. when they host UNC Greensboro.
