Eagles Battle In 3-2 Loss At High Point Wednesday Night

High Point, N.C. – Winthrop women's soccer battled the Big South Conference preseason favorite in a 3-2 loss Wednesday evening.

Game Recap
  • Winthrop struck early as Anna Kate Highsmith scored for a third straight game for a 1-0 lead in the 4th minute
  • Gengler served a ball into the box after a throw-in as Angelica Castro flicked it to the back post where Highsmith was there to put the ball in the net
  • The Panthers tied the match in the 24th minute when Chloe Le Franc
  • It was a fortunate bounce that led to the goal as Magdalena Schwarz hit a shot around the top of the box that was stuffed but the ball bounced into open space toward goal and Le Franc ran on and hit it first time into the lower left corner
  • Izzy Giarrizzi made a huge save in the 29th minute when Juliette Vidal collected a ball cleared out outside the box, cut back to her right foot and fired a shot that Giarrizzi made a full extended dive to tip away for a corner that kept the game tied at 1-1
  • Eagles tried to take the lead on the counter as Valentina Mosquera played a ball behind the Panthers defense as Alexandra Perez ran on and was unable to get a shot past the keeper as she pounced on the ball
  • The Panthers did grab a second goal before the half as Ashley Rainho scored in the 39th minute
  • Skyler Prillaman hit a shot around the edge of the box that was saved by a diving Giarrizzi pushing the rebound wide but Rainho ran on and hit a shot first time past Giarrizzi for the lead
  • Another fortunate bounce led to a third goal for the Panthers in the 60th minute as a cross deflected to the top of the box where Lindsey DeHaven was alone and collected the ball as Bella Hovis tried to recover but DeHaven took a touch to the right and buried a shot into the top left corner
  • Eagles earned a free kick about 30-35 yards out in the 70th minute as Gengler served a ball over the top as Abbie McCrea ran on and headed a shot toward goal but Morgan Hairston made the save to keep the two goal advantage
  • Pressure on the offensive end paid off for the Eagles in the 83rd minute as they drew within a goal at 3-2 as Highsmith stripped the ball from the feet of the keeper and played a square ball to McCrea in front who tapped it in the open net 

Notables
  • High Point had a 10-5 advantage in shots on goal and 6-1 in corner kicks
  • Highsmith netted her fourth goal in the last three games and has scored a goal in three straight games
  • McCrea scored her first collegiate goal and became the 9th different Winthrop player to score this season

Looking Ahead
Winthrop will play its second straight road contest on Sunday, Oct. 3 when it travels to Hampton, Va. to take on Hampton in a Big South matchup.
