Eagles Earn Conference Road Win Against Hampton Sunday Afternoon

Williamsburg, Va. – Winthrop bounced back from its first Big South Conference loss to earn a 4-1 win at Hampton, Sunday afternoon.

Game Recap
  • There wasn't much action offensively over the first 32 minutes of the match but the Eagles started to apply pressure in the 33rd minute
  • It started with a shot by Abbie McCrea that was saved and then a minute later Lily Meisten had a shot blocked but that blocked shot was collected by the Eagles and McCrea eventually set up Alexandra Perez for the first goal of the game
  • Eagles led 1-0 at the break as the Eagles had a 5-2 edge in shots and 1-0 on corners
  • In the second half, three goals came within two and a half minutes of each other
  • Winthrop went up 2-0 on a goal by Dee Burnett, set up by Emma Smith
  • Hampton struck back 13 seconds later on a goal by Maya Martir
  • A little over two minutes later the Eagles regained a two goal advantage when McCrea set up her third goal of the game as Smith scored for the 3-1 lead
  • Eagles added another goal in the 83rd minute when Angelica Castro scored off a pass from Lexi Sheely

  • Winthrop finished with a 12-8 advantage in shots and 5-1 on corner kicks
  • The Eagles improve to 3-0 all-time vs. Hampton
  • Burnett and Castro scored their first goals of the season as Winthrop now has 11 different goal scorers on the season
  • The four goals are the most in a conference road game for the Eagles since the 2019 team won 4-1 at Charleston Southern (Oct. 2)
  • The three second half goals are the most goals in a half by an Eagle team since the regular season finale of the 2019 season at USC Upstate (Oct. 26)
