Eagles Down Mercer 3-1 Tuesday Night

Rock Hill, S.C. — Behind first half goals from Bryant Jimenez-Pearce and Ethan Stevenson, Winthrop captured a 3-1 victory over Mercer Tuesday evening.

Game Recap
  • Eagles struck early as they were awarded with a penalty in the 9th minute after Suhong Jung was fouled in the box
  • Bryant Jimenez-Pearce stepped in and placed a ball into the lower right corner for the 1-0 lead
  • Brigham Larsen nearly scored less than five minutes after the first goal when Jayden Mace played a ball behind the defense and Larsen ran on but his shot from about 10 yards out sailed over the bar
  • Winthrop doubled its lead in the 26th minute when Brigham Larsen won a 50/50 ball near the top of the box, dribbled toward the line and crossed the ball in front for Ethan Stevenson for the tap in goal
  • Both teams created opportunities over the first 20-25 minutes of the second half but it was Winthrop that struck again as Stevenson slipped a ball into the box as Larsen ran on and buried it into the lower right corner
  • Mercer got on the board minutes after Winthrop's third goal as Baba Agbaje won a ball around the top of the box, played a back pass as Chad Eldridge ran on and smashed a shot into the left corner

Notables
  • Mercer finished with a 14-11 advantage in shots as the Eagles had a 5-4 edge in shots on goal
  • Eagles had eight corners while Mercer finished with seven
  • Sam Jones made three saves for his second win of the season in goal

Looking Ahead
Winthrop remains at home as it will host UNC Asheville on Saturday, Oct. 2 at 5 p.m. in its Big South Conference opener.
