Ethan Stevenson had a goal and two assists to help guide Winthrop to a 4-0 victory over UNC Asheville in its Big South Conference opener Saturday evening.

Game Recap
- Asheville applied some pressure early, but two shots were off frame and Sam Jones was able to make the save on the other
- In the 20th minute, the Eagles put away their first shot on goal for an early lead
- Ethan Stevenson delivered a ball into the box straight on from goal and Jayden Mace ran on, beating the defender to the cross and then tapped it by the keeper on the ground from about eight yards out
- That lifted the momentum of the Winthrop offense as he continued to create scoring chances and getting forward
- In the 30th minute Stevenson was set up with a one-on-one and tried to beat the keeper with the outside of his right foot but Leon Musial got his hand up to make the save
- The Eagles earned a corner in the late stages of the first half as Tyler Hornsby got on the other end of it as his header went off the crossbar but the ball popped out beyond the edge of the 18 and Taeyoon Oh ran on and ripped a shot into the top corner with six seconds remaining
- In the 51st minute off a corner kick, the ball was cleared back toward the top of the box as William Cardona ripped a shot through traffic to the lower right corner but Musial was down quick for the diving save
- The Bulldogs gained momentum and applied some pressure during the middle part of the second half but the Eagles stood tall and were able to continue holding a two game edge
- In the 73rd minute, Sam Jones hit a long punt that Stevenson battled a defender for and beat him to it as well as the keeper
- As the keeper approached Stevenson he tapped the ball around him, ran on and got a shot off before the defender got there and placed it into the open net for a 3-0 lead
- Eagles added another in the 84th minute as Stevenson played a ball to Suhong Jung as he dribbled to the right across outside the box and ripped a shot into the upper right corner
Notables
- Winthrop finished with a 14-11 advantage in shots, 6-4 in shots on goal
- The Eagles had a 7-3 advantage in corner kicks
- The goal for Jung is the first of his Winthrop career
- Jones finished with four saves for his first collegiate shutout
- Eagles have now scored three or more goals in four of its seven games this season
- This was the largest margin of victory in a conference opener since the 2002 team beat High Point 7-0
- It is also the first shutout in a league opener since 2014 (Won 2-0 over Liberty)
Looking Ahead
Winthrop will hit the road for its first conference game away when it heads to Farmville, Va. to take on Longwood Wednesday night at 7:30 p.m.
