Rock Hill, S.C. — Winthrop men's soccer gave a strong effort to overcome a three goal halftime deficit and in the end fell 4-2 to Georgia State, Saturday evening on Eagle Field.

Game Recap
- First 20 minutes of the match didn't see either team really threaten to score
- Georgia State broke through first in the 25th minute when Simon Carlson collected a free ball inside the box, dribbled back toward the middle into open space and slotted a shot into the lower left corner
- Conor Stephens tried to equalize in the 31st minute as he received a pass at the edge of the box turned and tried to fire a shot into the left corner that just missed wide
- Things were looking as if the Panthers would head into the break with a one goal lead before netting two before the half for a 3-0 lead
- The first goal came in the 44th minute when Luna played a ball down the right side to Andrew Miller-Bell and his cross found Salar Faryar at the near post who headed it home
- Less than a minute later, Ramon Munoz played a long ball across the field as Miller-Bell ran on and he ripped a ball in front that hit the head of Ethan Sassine and into the net
- Less than two minutes into the second half, Jonathan Foster got the Eagles on the board
- Bryant Jimenez-Pearce played a long ball that Foster beat the defender to and he dribbled one-on-one with the keeper and slid a shot past him to make it 3-1
- In the 71st minute the Panthers earned a free kick about 22 yards out from goal and Luna stepped up and curled a shot into the top right corner for the goal
- In the 76th minute the Eagles drew a penalty as Brigham Larsen was taken down in the box and Jimenez-Pearce stepped in and buried the shot to cut the deficit in half
- In the 85th minute, Ethan Stevenson beat the defender in the box and dribbled in from an angle as he let a shot fly by the defender recovered just in time to deflect the ball out for a corner
Notables
- Georgia State finished with a 19-8 advantage in shots (9-3 in shots on goal) and the Eagles had a 3-1 edge in corner kicks
- Sam Jones finished with five saves while Gunter Rackenburg finished with one save for the Panthers
- Jimenez-Pearce had his second game this season with a goal and an assist as he lead the team in scoring with seven points

Winthrop has a long layoff before it is back in action when it hosts Mercer on Tuesday, Sept. 28 at 6 p.m.
