Eagles Nab 2-0 Road Win At Wofford Sunday Afternoon

Spartanburg, S.C. – Winthrop ended a two-game skid as it earned a 2-0 win at Wofford College, Sunday afternoon in non-conference women's soccer action.

Game Recap
  • Wofford had the first shot of the game in the 5th minute but Rachel Rasins misfired high and left
  • Alexandra Perez gave Wofford keeper Caroline Doss her first test with a shot on frame in the 12th minute that was saved
  • Izzy Giarrizzi kept the Terriers off the scoreboard in the 13th minute with her first save of the match
  • Jessica Gengler fired a shot on frame in the 16th minute but Doss was there for the save
  • Winthrop snagged the lead in the 36th minute as a corner kick was redirected off a Wofford player into the net for an own goal
  • Eagles struck early in the second half for a 2-0 lead as Valentina Mosquera found the back of the net in the 49th minute
  • Doss came out of net to charge the ball but Mosquera beat her to it and found the back of the net with a chip shot
  • The Terriers responded with an onslaught of offense in the next few minutes that began with a shot by Rasins that pinged off the crossbar
  • Then Giarrizzi made two saves to keep it a two-goal game
  • Things cooled down after that for the next 20 minutes when Giarrizzi came up with another save in the 75th and 78th minute
  • Giarrizzi made two more saves in the final 10 minutes to record her first collegiate shutout

Notables
  • Mosquera, who made her first collegiate start, scored her team-leading second goal
  • Giarrizzi finished with a career-high eight saves and had at least seven saves for the third straight match
  • With the victory, the Eagles now have the edge in the all-time series with Wofford at 4-3
  • Eagles have won three of their last five road games dating back to the spring

Looking Ahead
Winthrop returns home for its next contest on Saturday, Sept. 18 as it will take on Longwood in its Big South Conference opener at 1 p.m. The game is part of a doubleheader with the men's team who will face Georgia State at 5 p.m.
