Game Recap
- Both teams created good opportunities in the final third but were unable to convert until South Carolina did so in the 19th minute
- Parker League crossed the ball from inside the box toward the front of goal as Sam Bell dove and deflected the ball, but it came right to Lorenzo Nagy who finished the rebound for a 1-0 lead
- Ethan Stevenson tied the game in the 26th minute as Bryant Jimenez-Pearce slipped a ball behind the Gamecock, setting up Stevenson with a 1v1 and he finished for his first collegiate goal
- Gamecocks regained the lead in the 36th minute as Peter Clement was left unmarked in the box and he headed home a service from Logan Hitzeman
- The Clement goal gave the Gamecocks a 2-1 lead at the half
- Winthrop had a great opportunity to draw level in the 62nd minute when Ben Goodman drew a foul at the top of the box
- William Cardona took the free kick and tried to beat the goalkeeper to the lower right corner as Tristan Himes made the save but the rebound came out in front of goal
- Sean Green followed the shot but was unable to redirect the rebound into the open frame as it sailed over the bar
- Five minutes later the Gamecocks added to their lead as Logan Frost spun to the touch line and played a ball in front to Brian Banahan who finished to the lower left corner from about eight yards out
- South Carolina added a fourth goal in the 81st minute as Frost played a pass in front of goal as Christian Kraus finished from just around the edge of the six yard box
Notables
- Jimenez-Bryant picked up his third career assist and now leads the team in scoring with four points
- South Carolina finished with a 16-12 advantage in shots and 12-4 on corners
Looking Ahead
Winthrop will be back in action on Friday, Sept. 3 when it travels to Lynchburg, Va. for its third straight contest to begin the season. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m.
