Late Goal Helps Eagles Earn 2-2 Draw Against Appalachian State Wednesday Night

Game Recap
  • Appalachian State took a 1-0 lead in the 21st minute when Kirsten Seeley's service found Carly Lantz in front of goal about 12 yards out
  • Lantz hit the cross first time into the top right corner
  • The Eagles had a couple opportunities before the end of the half but were unable to convert as they trailed 1-0 at the break
  • The Eagles came out of the half applying pressure immediately as Valentina Mosquera nearly tied the match in the 48th minute
  • Mosquera raced down the left wing and as she neared the box let a shot fly that hit off the cross bar at the near post
  • Winthrop finally broke through in the 55th minute as Mosquera got another chance as she scored her first collegiate goal
  • Saide Guest headed a pass behind the Mountaineer defense as Mosquera ran on to the ball inside the box and calmly buried a shot into the lower right corner to draw level
  • Mountaineers regained the lead 2-1 in the 66th minute when Breckyn Monteith settled a deflected ball and placed a shot into the lower right corner
  • Over the final 25 minutes of regulation the Eagles pushed to tie the game and in the 90th minute it paid off
  • Winthrop earned a free kick about 25 yards out to the left of the goalkeeper and halfway between the 18-yard box and sideline
  • Erika Brown stepped up and curled a service in front of goal that made it cleanly through a crowd and into the back of the net to tie the game at 2-2
  • Both teams were able to get the ball in the final third but unable to produce any threatening opportunities
  • Appalachian State finished with a 13-9 advantage in shots and 6-4 edge in shots on goal
  • Izzy Giarrizzi finished with four saves while Appalachian State's Kerry Eagleston had two saves  

Notables
  • Eagles remain unbeaten for the first time after two games since the 2018 season when they began the year 1-0-1
  • Mosquera is the third Eagle this season to score her first collegiate goal and now leads the team with three points
  • This is the second straight overtime game this season and the Eagles have now played in overtime in three of the last four games and four of the last six 

Looking Ahead
Winthrop heads to Lexington, Va. For its first road test of the season when it takes on VMI at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 28.
