Eagles Open 2021 Season On The Road At Stetson

Rock Hill, S.C.— Winthrop men's soccer opens the 2021 season on the road Thursday night as it takes on Stetson at 7 p.m.

SEASON OPENERS
Winthrop has won seven of its last 10 season openers and are 24-21 all-time. In 2019 the Eagles earned a 2-0 victory at VMI, which was the second straight year the team recorded a shutout in the opener. This is the second straight season and fourth out of the last five the Eagles have opened the season on the road It's the first season-opener in the state of Florida since 2016 when the team opened up at North Florida.
SERIES HISTORY VERSUS STETSON
Eagles and Hatters meet for the 8th time as the Eagles lead the series 4-2-1. The teams last met in 2019 on Eagle Field with Stetson holding on for a 2-0 win. It was the first time in the history of the series that either opponent was shutout. This is only the second time the Eagles have traveled to Stetson as the first meeting came in 2007 when the two teams played to a 2-2-2 draw. The teams have met three times in Rock Hill and three times on a neutral site.       
A GLANCE AT WINTHROP
Winthrop returns 19 players for the 2021 and added 11 new players. This includes sophomore Grayson Woodard, who led the team in scoring in the spring. Among the returnees are eight players that started at least six of the nine games in the spring and all three goalkeepers that split time with Dean DePinto and Sam Jones playing four games and Sam Bell playing three games.
Winthrop is looking to get back to the Big South Conference tournament for the first time since 2019 when it was seeded 4th.
This game marks the 920th in the history of the program with 447 wins all-time. Daniel Ridenhour is in his sixth season as the head coach of the Eagles after serving the previous 12 seasons as an associate/assistant coach.
