Eagles Fall 4-3 In Series Opener At Radford

Radford, Va. — Winthrop softball fell 4-3 in a hard fought series opening loss at Radford, Saturday afternoon in Big South Conference action.

WHAT HAPPENED
  • Radford struck first to take a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning
  • Madison Canady led off with a double to left over the head of Bailey Warren
  • After Destiny Freeman was hit by a pitch, Autumn Slemaker reached on an error to load the bases
  • Canady scored on an RBI groundout by Lindsay Hunter
  • Winthrop came back to tie the game in the top of the 3rd as Macy McCall reached on an error by the shortstop and then stole second to get into scoring position
  • Warren followed with a grounder off the glove of the pitcher and beat the throw to first to put runners at the corner
  • Warren then stole second to put two runners in scoring position for Ashley Westbrooks, who came through with a single to left center as McCall scored
  • The threat ended when the Eagles hit into a double play
  • The Highlanders grabbed a 3-1 lead in the bottom of the third courtesy of a couple of fielding errors by the Eagles
  • Sydney Fisher reached on an error to start the bottom half and moved to second two batters later on a single by Talia Douglas
  • Canady hit a grounder to second that was fielded by Chloe Baker as she made a throw to second to get the leadoff runner but the throw was off the mark and went into left field that allowed both baserunners to come around and score
  • In the top of the sixth, Winthrop tied the game at 3-3 as Taylor Charlton hit a two-run homer to left center
  • Ansley Gilreath followed with a triple down the right field line but was stranded
  • Radford regained the lead in the bottom of the sixth on a 2-out RBI single by Hunter
  • Winthrop did get a runner aboard with one out as McCall walked but Warren popped up to third and Wesbrooks flied out to right center to end the game
 
EXTRA BASES
  • Eagles must win both games of the doubleheader on Sunday to earn its way into the Big South Conference Tournament (Top 4 teams in league standings)
  • McCall is now alone in 9th in Big South Conference history for steals in a single-season with 42
  • Westbrooks moved into alone in 4th all-time with 132 career RBI and into a tie for 4th all-time with 41 doubles
  • Warren extended her streak of reaching base to nine games and Kaitlyn Tucker has reached in seven straight
  • Charlton's homerun was her 12th of the season, which ties her with Gilreath for the league lead

Winthrop and Radford complete the series on Sunday with a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m.
