Eagles Split Doubleheader At Radford Sunday Afternoon

Radford, Va. — Winthrop earned a doubleheader split in its final regular season series at Radford, Sunday afternoon. The Eagles fell 5-3 in the opener and then earned a 4-1 win in the nightcap.

WHAT HAPPENED
Game 1
  • Eagles got things going early as Macy McCall led off the game with a double to left center followed by a bunt single by Bailey Warren
  • Warren broke for second and then on a delayed steal, McCall raced home safely for a 1-0 lead
  • Eagles tried to add to the lead as Taylor Charlton flied out to right field and Warren tried to score from third but was out at the plate for the 3rd out
  • Radford came right back to tie the game in the bottom of the first as it loaded the bases after three straight one out singles
  • The run came across as a ground ball was hit to the hole at short as Kaitlyn Tucker fielded it and raced to third to touch the bag for the force out
  • Madyson Watson got a fly out to right to end the threat
  • Watson put the Eagles back on top with a solo shot to right center with two outs in the second
  • In the top of the third inning, Warren hammered a shot to center field for a 3-1 lead
  • In the bottom of the third the Highlanders loaded the bases with two outs
  • Destiny Freeman hit a flare to left field and Warren raced in and made a full extension diving catch to end the inning
  • Autumn Slemaker led off the bottom of the fourth with a solo homerun to left center to make it a one run game at 3-2
  • Radford did eventually load the bases courtesy of two walks and a hit-by-pitch but a line out to short ended the threat
  • A one out double by Freeman got things going for Radford in the bottom of the fifth
  • Slemaker followed with her second homerun of the game with a shot to left for a 4-3 lead
  • The Highlanders extended the lead to two runs later in the inning on a sacrifice fly to left by Taylor Breidt
  • Winthrop did get the game-tying run to the plate in the top of the seventh as McCall singled and then moved to second on a groundout by Warren
  • Westbrooks put the ball in play but grounded out to third to end the game
 
Game 2
  • Radford grabbed a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first as it began the inning with back-to-back singles and with one away Madison Canady came through with an RBI single
  • Winthrop answered in the top of the second as Taylor Charlton drew a leadoff walk
  • After back-to-back strikeouts, Watson reached on an errorand Charlton advanced to third
  • Chloe Baker came through with a single through the left side to tie the game 1-1
  • Eagles used their speed to take a 2-1 lead in the top of the third as McCall led off reaching on an error
  • McCall stole second, stole third and scored on a muffed throw when stealing third
  • Warren followed with a single and after Westbrooks flew out to left field, Warren stole second to get into scoring position but Charlton and Gilreath were unable to drive her in
  • Eagles grabbed a 3-1 lead in the fourth as Tucker doubled to center to lead off
  • Watson followed with a single to center, scoring Tucker for the two run advantage
  • Gilreath put the Eagles up 4-1 in the 6th when she led off the inning with a shot to left on a 1-1 pitch
  • Makayla Cyzick earned her 3rd career win in her 5th career start as she allowed one earned run on seven hits with a walk and two strikeouts
 
EXTRA BASES
  • Gilreath's homerun in the sixth inning of the second game gives her 33 in her career, tying her with Chelsey Schoenfeldt for the all-time lead in program history
  • It was also her 13th of the season, which leads the Big South and is the second-best single-season mark in program history
  • Charlton's 12 homeruns on the year are the third most in a single-season by a Winthrop player
  • McCall had four steals on the day, including three in the second game of the doubleheader for 46 steals on the year
  • McCall's 46 steals lead the Big South and the 8th best single-season mark in league history (10 shy of record)
  • Warren extended her streak of reaching base to a career-high 11 games
  • Baker had a career-high three hits in game two of the doubleheader
  • Eagles now have 49 homeruns on the year, which is the third most in a single-season in program history
