Charleston, S.C. – Winthrop's offense came alive in Saturday's double header against Charleston Southern, winning Game 1 in seven innings, with a dominant 17-4 performance, before taking Game 2 of the day, 9-7.
Scout McFalls had himself an afternoon, going 4-for-5 with four RBI and was a home run shy of the cycle in Game 1. The senior kept his hot streak going in the series finale, going 2-for-5 at the plate with a solo home run.
The Eagles have now swept the Buccaneers in 2021, winning all five regular season contests. Winthrop improves to 15-23 on the season with a 12-17 against conference opponents.

HOW IT HAPPENED
GAME 1
- Scout McFalls led off the afternoon with a lead-off double and came home in the next at-bat when Joey Tepper laced a line drive up the middle to give Winthrop a 1-0 lead.
- Colten Rendon pitched a 1-2-3 inning getting the Eagles back up to the plate quickly.
- With one out, Joe McNamara, Tyler Baker and McFalls strung together back-to-back-to-back singles with McNamara coming home off McFalls' at-bat.
- Baker came home on Tepper's groundout while McFalls also scored in Winthrop's half of the inning on a throwing error during Dillon Morton's at-bat taking a 4-0 lead.
- Winthrop put up three more runs in the top of the 3rd, highlighted by a two-RBI triple off the bat of McFalls.
- The Buccaneers threatened in the bottom of the 3rd with runners of second and third with two outs. Rendon got Johnny Oliveira to fly out to keep CSU scoreless through three innings.
- Charleston got on the board in the bottom of the 4th when Andrew Bullock singled deep to right, scoring Adronica to make it a 7-1 contest.
- The Eagles kept piling on the runs with 10 over the course of the 5th and 6th inning.
- In the 5th, Joe McNamara, Tyler Baker and Scout McFalls singled in three consecutive at-bats, with McNamara coming home on McFalls' single. Joey Tepper walked to load up the bases before Dillon Morton was hit-by-pitch, walking in another run. The inning was capped off by a RBI single off the bat of Ty Hooks to make it a 12-1 game. Andrew Jenner scored on a wild pitch to round out the six-run inning, 13-1.
- Two of Winthrop's four 6th inning come home on a two-RBI single off the bat of Ty Hooks.
- The Buccaneers scored two runs in the 7th inning but the Eagles' lead was too much to come back from. Winthrop led by 13 runs ending the game after the 7th inning, 17-4.
GAME 2
- Winthrop kept things rolling in the top of the 1st with a solo homerun off the bat of Joey Tepper.
- Both teams put up zeros in the 2nd before an explosive 3rd inning for both sides.
- In the top of the 3rd, the Eagles plated six runs, with a run coming home on three consecutive singles from Spencer Yankle, Andrew Jenner and Ty Hooks. To round out the offensive efforts, Jonathan Strauss reached on a fielder's choice while both Hooks and Jenner came home on a throwing error on the play to take a 7-0 lead.
- The Bucs fought back in their half of the inning, putting up a four spot to cut Winthrop's lead to three, 7-4. Andrew Bullock was the highlight of the inning, blasting a three-run homer over the left field fence.
- In the top of the 5th, Yankle and Jenner both reached base to lead-off the inning. Yankle scored when Hooks grounded into a double play to extend Winthrop's lead, 8-4.
- Daniel Blair took over on the mound in the bottom of the 5th for Willie Lumpkin, who pitched 4.0 solid innings, striking out four. Blair gave up a lead-off single before striking out the next two batters faced and getting out of the inning unscathed.
- McFalls stayed hot at the plate, launching his third home run of the season over the center field wall, giving the Eagles a 9-4 edge.
- Blair was able to pitch around trouble, leaving three runners on in the bottom of the 7th to hang on to the Eagles' five-run lead.
- In the bottom of the 8th, CSU got another run across when Maggio came home on a wild pitch, 9-5.
- The Buccaneers threatened in the bottom of the ninth, loading the bases with no outs and plating a pair of runs but couldn't complete the comeback. The Eagles sweep the series, taking Game 2 of Saturday's double header, 9-7.
ON DECK
The Eagles will travel to Buies Creek for a midweek meeting with Campbell on Tuesday, May 11. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. A win on Tuesday would snap a six-game losing skid against the Camels. This will be the Eagles final conference road trip of the season.
