Eagles Top Gardner-Webb Tuesday Night, 7-6

ROCK HILL, S.C. – The Eagles extend their winning streak to three after topping the Gardner-Webb Runnin' Bulldogs Tuesday night, 7-6.
 
With three games left to play, Winthrop is still in the hunt for the No. 4 seed in the Big South Conference tournament.
 
They improve to 18-25 overall with a 15-19 mark against conference opponents.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Eagles got on the board in the first inning after Ty Hooks hit a deep sac fly to right field, scoring Joe McNamara who walked and advanced to second and third on an error earlier in the inning to take a 1-0 lead.
  • Winthrop struck again in the 3rd. Tyler Baker led off the inning with a double, McNamara walked and McFalls singled to load up the bases with no outs.
  • In the next at-bat Ty Hooks reached on a fielder's choice and while McFalls was out at second, Baker came home to make it a 2-0 contest.
  • Cody Whitten pitched a 1-2-3 top of the 4th to keep the Runnin' Bulldogs off the board.
  • Whitten loaded the bases with one out in the top of the 5th before Joe Simone hit a deep sac fly to left, scoring Joe Brazil to cut Winthrop's lead to one.
  • Scout McFalls broke the game open in the bottom of the 5th with a three-run shot over the right field wall to take a 5-1 lead.
  • Ty Hooks singled in the next at-bat and advanced to second on a wild pitched.
  • Spencer Yankle doubled to center, with Hooks advancing to third.
  • Hooks came home on Andrew Jenner's ground-out to second to lead 6-1 after five innings.
  • Cody Whitten's day was done after five innings. He gave up just one run with six strikeouts.
  • The Runnin' Bulldogs came fighting back in the top of the 6th when Ben LaSpaluto hit a three-run home run to cut Winthrop's lead to just two, 6-4.
  • Gardner-Webb tied things up at six in the top of the 7th when LaSpaluto singled down the left field line, driving in a pair of runs.  
  • The tie didn't last long. McFalls doubled to right field to lead off the inning and later came home on Spencer Yankle's sac fly to centerfield to take a 7-6 lead.
  • Macklin Ohs would come in to pitch the 8th and 9th innings for the Eagles, earning the save after giving up just one hit and striking out a pair.
  • Jason Crumley would earn the win and improve to 2-3 after 1.1 innings pitched in relief.
 
ON DECK
Winthrop will host the Presbyterian Blue Hose on Thursday and Friday, May 20-21 to close out the regular season. First pitch on Thursday is scheduled for 3 p.m. while Friday's double header will begin at 12 p.m. Winthrop baseball will recognize the graduating classes of 2020 and 2021 prior to the start of Game 2 on Friday afternoon.
