Cary, N.C. — Winthrop softball split a doubleheader at North Carolina Central Thursday afternoon with a 6-0 win in the first game before dropping a seesaw battle in the nightcap.

WHAT HAPPENED
Game 1
- Eagles got an early jump on NCCU when Ashley Westbrooks hit a two-out single and came across on an Ansley Gilreath single through the left side as the left fielder stumbled with the ball
- The two out rally continued after Madyson Watson drew a walk and Taylor Charlton singled up the middle to plate Gilreath, extending the lead to 2-0
- Starting off hot, Watson had six strikeouts through the first three innings
- Macy McCall drove a 3-1 pitch up the middle for a single and stole second base for her 29th of the season with one out in the second
- The threat ended when McCall was caught stealing third
- In the top of the fourth Lauren King and Kaitlyn Tucker reach base after back-to-back throwing errors from NCCU's shortstop
- Ashton Vanhouse filled the bases on a walk, but shortstop Maegan Garrison redeemed herself making the last two plays to get the outs with no runs scoring
- Of the six batters that came up to bat for Winthrop in the fourth, all the balls in play went to the shortstop
- For her second hit of the day, Ansley Gilreath singled to center field in the top of the fifth on a full count and Reema Patel replaced her on base
- With two outs Taylor Charltonhit a ball to the shortstop, as she was charging the ball Patel was ruled out for interference to end the inning
- Eagles took advantage of some free bases in the sixth after Tucker walked, Macy McCall
- Ashley Westbrooks came up and cleared the bases on a double to left field extending the lead to 5-0
- had a dominant showing with five scoreless innings allowing just two hits and striking out 11 before giving way to Aisha Weixlmann for the final two innings
- Weixlmann allowed just one hit in two innings, walked two and struck out three
- Leading off in the top of the seventh, Watson singled up the middle and was replaced by pinch-runner Ashley Wood
- Wood scored on a dropped fly ball in center field hit by Taylor Charlton for a 6-0 lead
Game 2
- continued to swing a hot bat as she doubled to right center to score Warren for a 1-0 lead in the first
- followed up with a single to put runners at the corners but that was all the Eagles would get
- Quick to respond in the bottom of the first, NCCU scored on as Joirea Dumas scored on a Winthrop throwing error to even the score 1-1
- Wasting no time to start the second, King doubled to right field to lead off the inning
- Ashton Vanhouse hit a grounder to short and the throw came home to get King at the plate to keep the game tied
- Tucker plated on a groundout to the first baseman by McCall
- Eagles production continued as Westbrooks singled through the left side and scored on a triple from Charlton in deep center field for a 3-1 lead
- Top of the line-up for NCCU Hailey Batista doubled to lead off the third inning
- Dumas singled through the left side to score Batista and make it a one-run game at 3-2
- NCCU went on to score four more for a 6-3 lead
- Eagles struck back immediately in the top of the fourth with two runs
- beat out an infield single and then stole second and third base to get things going
- Vanhouse was thrown out at home trying to score on a grounder by McCall to first base
- With a 1-0 count Warren singled through the right side and then a Westbrooks deep fly out to center allowed McCall to move to third
- Eagles closed the gap as McCall and Warren came home on an outfield single from Gilreath her fourth hit of the day
EXTRA BASES
- McCall extended her streak of reaching base to 35 straight games before the streak came to an end in the second game
- Westbrooks now has the team's longest current streak of reaching base at eight games
- Head coach Windy Thees earned her 300th NCAA DI victory and now has 463 wins all-time
- Westbrooks moved into 5th all-time in career RBI at Winthrop with 128 and now needs 17 to become the program's all-time leader
- Watson had 11 strikeouts in her game one victory, which is the third time she's had 11 or more strikeouts in a game this season
- Watson has now had nine or more strikeouts in an appearance nine times this season

Winthrop will be at home this weekend with a doubleheader on Saturday against Presbyterian College at 1 p.m. The series will conclude on Sunday at 1 p.m. with a single-game.
