Pitching, Defense Lead Eagles To Doubleheader Sweep Of PC Saturday Afternoon

Rock Hill, S.C. — Behind strong pitching and defense, Winthrop swept a doubleheader against Presbyterian College Saturday afternoon at Terry Field. Winthrop took the first game 3-1 on a walk-off and then earned a 3-0 win in the nightcap.

WHAT HAPPENED
Game 1 
  • Blue Hose struck first in the top of the first as Jaiden Tweed took a 2-2 pitch just over the wall in center
  • Macey McCall singled to lead off the bottom of the first and stole second with one out to get in scoring position but was stranded after two well hit balls but Ashley Westbrooks and Ansley Gilreath
  • Eagles had runners and second and third with one out in the bottom of the second as Lauren King sliced a ball down the right field line that looked like it might fall in but the right fielder Courtney White was able to make the catch on the run
  • Ashton Vanhouse tried to reach on a bunt but popped up to the pitcher to end the threat
  • McCall drew a walk to lead off the third inning and moved to second on a wild pitch
  • Bailey Warren drilled a line drive off the wall in center to put runners and second and third
  • Westbrooks took a 2-1 pitch to left field to score McCall and put runners at the corner and tie the game at 1-1
  • Eagles were unable to take the lead as Gilreath and Madyson Watson struck out and then Taylor Charlton fouled out to first base to end the inning
  • Winthrop had a good chance to break the tie in the fourth as Vanhouse reached on an error with two outs and then the Eagles loaded the bases when McCall was hit by a pitch and Warren walked
  • Westbrooks stepped up and on a full count ripped a line drive to left but just a couple of steps form the left fielder who made the catch for the third out
  • With two outs in the bottom of the seventh, Charlton drew a walk to keep the inning alive
  • Kaitlyn Tucker stepped in and on a 2-2 count hit a walk-off two-run shot to left for a 3-1 win
  • Watson finished the game allowing one run on three hits with no walks and three strikeouts for her 11th win on the year 
WHAT HAPPENED
Game 2
  • McCall was hit to lead off the bottom of the first, stole second to get into scoring position and was sacrificed to third by Warren
  • After a Westbrooks ground out, Charlton walked to set up GIlreath and she delivered a double to center to score McCall for a 1-0 lead
  • In the bottom of the fifth, Vanhouse reached on an error to start the inning and McCall followed with a walk
  • Right after the McCall walk the skies opened up and there was a 12-minute rain delay
  • Following the delay, Warren sacrificed the runners over and then Westbrooks walked to load the bases
  • Charlton hit a flare down the right field line that fell in and bounced into foul territory allowing both runs to score for a 3-1 lead
  • In the sixth the Blue Hose got a runner aboard on a walk issued but Aisha Weixlmann, but she settled in and closed the door with back-to-back strikeouts to end the top half
  • In the seventh Weixlmann retired the first batter before giving up a single to left
  • Weixlmann came back to strikeout the next batter and then got a first pitch groundout to third to end the game
  • Weixlmann tossed a complete game allowing just three hits while walking one and striking out six for the shutout victory 
 
EXTRA BASES
  • McCall had three steals on the day and is now tied for the Winthrop single-season record of 33 set by Susan Funderburk in 1995
  • Westbrooks has now reached base safely in 10 straight games and is batting .303 during that stretch
  • Charlton extended her streak of reaching base safely to eight games
  • Westbrooks moved within one RBI of Chelsey Schoenfeldt (130) for 4th all-time while moving into a tie for 10th all-time in career hits with 196
  • Weixlmann's shutout was the first of her collegiate career (her 21st start)
