Eagles Fall To Campbell Saturday Afternoon, 8-5

ROCK HILL, S.C. – Winthrop suffered its first Big South loss Saturday afternoon to the Campbell Camels, 8-5.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Eagles got on the board first behind Lauren Morris' 15th goal of the season.
  • Molly Dankowski, assisted by the team's assist leader Bianca Tedesco, put Winthrop ahead 2-0 with a shot at the 16:42 mark in the first half.
  • Campbell got on the board with 13:35 remaining in the half when Mackenzie Kolesar found the back of the net, 2-1.
  • Morris scored another goal, this time with a man advantage, to regain the two goal edge, 3-1.
  • The lead didn't last long; Rasa Welsh scored less than 30 seconds later to cut Winthrop's lead to one again, 3-2.
  • Sam Bischoff tacked on another goal for the Camels with 4:08 remaining in the half to tie things up at three.
  • The teams would remain scoreless for the remaining four minutes and went into the halftime break tied up at three.
  • Out of the break, Rasa Welsh got the scoring underway, giving Campbell its first lead of the afternoon, 4-3.
  • Alyssa Angelo responded with a goal of her own, assisted by Lauren Asher to tie the game up once again, 4-4.
  • Kolesar found the back of the net again with 17:53 remaining in the game.
  • Lauren Asher got in on the scoring fun, scoring a free position goal to tie the game up at five, her 12th of the season.
  • The Camels would go on a 3-0 run to end the contest and leave Rock Hill with an 8-5 win.
 
NOTABLES
  • Winthrop had four different goal scorers, with Lauren Morris finishing as the only Eagle with multiple, finishing with two.
  • Mackenzie Kolesar led both teams with a three-goal performance.
  • Sara McGuire made 10 saves, tallying a .556 save percentage.
  • Julianna Sanchez dominated on the draw control, winning eight.
  • The Eagles had three different players record two or more caused turnovers, led by Alyssa Angelo who was credited with three. Kimora Bailey and Savanah Paton both had two.
  • Angelo also led the Eagles in ground balls, picking up four.
  • Winthrop committed 14 turnovers, while Campbell turned the ball over 16 times.
  • 14 of Winthrop's 23 shots were on-goal.
 
UP NEXT
The Eagles will travel to Radford, V.A. for a midweek contest with the Highlanders on Wednesday, April 7. Opening draw is scheduled for 4 p.m.
