N. Charleston, S.C. — Winthrop softball captured its weekend series at Charleston Southern after earning a doubleheader split Saturday afternoon. Winthrop dropped the opening game 2-1 but bounced back to take the nightcap 4-1.

WHAT HAPPENED
Game 1
- Buccaneers posed a threat early in the first with runners on first and second, Macy McCall grabbed the last out at the fence to get out unharmed
- Charleston Southern left the bases loaded after a couple of singles and a walk in the third inning but Warren made a catch in foul territory to retire the Buccaneers
- Getting things started in the fourth for Charleston Southern was Brown and Gagliano with back-to-back singles
- Cribb loaded the bases after dropping a bunt single down and then a sacrifice fly from Kroger put the Buccaneers up 1-0
- Cooper drove the first pitch to right center falling untouched for a double and then stole third
- Cooper scored on a line drive single by Brown
- Eagles responded in the sixth when McCall led off with an infield single to short
- After stealing second, McCall advanced to third on a wild pitch as Bailey Warren came through with a sacrifice fly to right field scoring McCall
- With one out Ashley Westbrooks grabbed her second hit of the day, a single down the right field line
- After advancing to second on an Ansley Gilreath ground ball to third, Westbrooks stole third
- Watson worked the count but fouled out to leftfield to end the threat
Game 2
- Leading off for the Eagles, McCall beat out an infield single but was thrown out attempting to steal second base
- Charleston Southern jumped to an early lead with a run in the first inning
- Brewington singled up the middle, stole second and advanced to third on an outfield single Satcher singled down the line and then the Buccaneers drew back-to-back walks to plate Brewington
- Madyson Watson singled with one out in the second and then Taylor Charlton stepped in the box and took a 2-2 pitch over the left field fence for her seventh homerun of the season
- Charleston Southern got a couple runners on in the third but Watson locked in strikeouts with the last two batters
- Watson led off the sixth driving a 2-3 pitch off the left center fence and was replaced by pinch-runner Reema Patel
- Charlton worked the count for a walk and then Lauren King moved the runners over to second and third
- Kaitlyn Tucker came through by driving an outside pitch down the right field line speeding around the bases for a stand-up triple for a 4-1 lead
- Picking up where Watson left off, Aisha Weixlmann retired the Buccaneers in order in the bottom of the sixth
- Charleston Southern posed a threat in the bottom of the seventh leading off with a single to center field
- Brewington then singled with one out to put two runners aboard, but Weixlmann shut the Buccaneers down striking out the last batter to secure the win for the Eagles
EXTRA BASES
- McCall extended her streak of reaching base to 34 straight games and is closing in on Lisa Kingsmore's single-season mark of 38
- Westbrooks has now reached base safely in six straight games and has a four-game hitting streak
