Eagles Come Up Short Against Campbell Saturday Afternoon, Fall 15-6

BUIES CREEK, N. C. – The Eagles couldn't find their stride against Campbell Saturday afternoon, falling 15-6 in the last game of the series. Winthrop falls to 8-10 on the season, 5-5 against Big South opponents.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Spencer Yankle was Winthrop's only base runner in the first inning with a two-out double to right center. He would advance to third on a wild pitch and get left on base.
  • Campbell got two early runs in the bottom of the first. Arias came home when Packard grounded out to the shortstop, while Collin Wolf doubled to right center, bringing Arnold in from third.
  • Ty Hooks led off the top of the 2nd inning with a single to right.
  • Joe McNamara singled up the left side with one out to put Hooks in scoring position.
  • In the next at-bat, Ethan Fewell walked on a full count, moving Hooks to third and McNamara to second.
  • With bases loaded, Tyler Baker walked on a full count, bringing Ty Hooks home, cutting Campbell's lead to one, 2-1.
  • Babin and Lawson Harrill strung together back-to-back singles to lead off the bottom of the second.
  • Arias struck out swinging in the next at-bat, before Babin was picked off at second.
  • Harrill ended up in scoring position off a wild pitch and would come home on a single off the bat of Arnold to take a 3-1 lead.
  • Yankle hit another double to lead off the top of the third inning to give the Eagles a base runner in scoring position.
  • The catcher would advance to third when Scout McFalls grounded out and would score when Hooks grounded out in the next at-bat to make it a 3-2 game.
  • The Eagles were facing a 6-2 deficit after Daniel Blair gave up another three runs in the bottom of the third. Z Williams doubled, bringing home Packard, who singled to lead off the inning. The other two runs would come home off a single off the bat of Babin.
  • The 4th, 5th and 6th inning were scoreless for both teams.
  • Winthrop got two runs back in the top of the 7th. Luke Hannum walked to get the inning underway.
  • Andrew Jenner singled in the next at-bat, giving Winthrop runners on first and second. Yankle and McFalls were walked on 3-1 counts in back-to-back at-bats that loaded up the bases and brought home Hannum from third.
  • Hooks grounded in to a double play that brought home another run. The Eagles were closing in to Campbell's lead, 6-4.
  • The comeback didn't last long. Campbell put together a seven-run 7th inning.
  • After walking the lead-off batter, Dalton Skinner got the next two batters out. The Camels broke the game wide open with two outs, putting up seven runs off five hits. Campbell had a 13-4 lead after seven innings.
  • The Camels kept pouring on the runs, tacking on two more in the bottom of the 8th. Neto and Arnold both came home on a Peechatka double to left center. With just one inning to play, the Camels led 15-4.
  • Ryan Watson and Will Martin were walked in back-to-back plate appearances to give Winthrop two base runners with no outs.
  • Drake Smith was hit with the pitch to give the Eagles bases loaded, no outs.
  • Watson came home when Szvetitz hit a shot to right field. Campbell still led, 15-5.
  •  Matt Leveson was walked on a full count in the next at-bat to bring in another run.
  • The comeback would end there as the next three batters were sat down in order. The Camels sweep the three-game series with a 16-5 victory Saturday afternoon.
 
ON DECK
The Eagles and Camels will face off for a fourth-straight contest when Winthrop hosts Campbell at the Winthrop Ballpark on Tuesday, April 6. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. This game was originally scheduled for March 16.
