ROCK HILL, S.C. – Winthrop lacrosse closed out the 2021 regular season with a dominant 21-11 win over Gardner-Webb on Saturday afternoon. The Eagles 21 goals ties their season-high. Winthrop closes out the season 7-7 overall, with a 3-3 record against Big South opponents.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Savanah Paton got the scoring underway with a goal at the 25:35 mark.
- Brittany Sherrod evened the score with a goal of her own, 1-1.
- The Eagles went on a run, scoring eight unanswered goals to take a 9-1 lead.
- Gardner-Webb's Gabby Zerna stopped the bleeding when she found the back of the net with 6:25 remaining in the half, 9-2.
- Lauren Asher scored her first goal of the afternoon to round out Winthrop's first-half scoring, 10-2.
- The Runnin' Bulldogs went on a 3-0 run to close out the first half, cutting Winthrop's lead in half after 30 minutes of play, 10-5.
- GWU kept the scoring going with two quick goals out of halftime, 10-7.
- The Eagles responded with a pair of goals of their own from Paton and Alyssa Angelo, 12-7.
- In less than two minutes, McKenna Blick scored twice, separated by a goal from Gardner-Webb's Tori Birks to make it a 14-9 game.
- Six unanswered goals for the home team gave them an 11-point lead, 20-9, with 9:05 remaining.
- The Runnin' Bulldogs didn't back down, putting up a pair of goals to cut Winthrop's lead to single-digits, 20-11.
- Grayson McKenzie scored with 25 seconds remaining to give Winthrop the 21-11 win.
