Lacrosse Season Comes To An End In Big South Semifinals

HIGH POINT, N.C. – Winthrop lacrosse fell to top-seeded High Point Friday night in the Big South Lacrosse Championship Semifinals, 21-8.
 
The Eagles finish the 2021 campaign 7-8 overall, 3-3 against conference opponents.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Panthers came out of the gates hot, scoring six unanswered goals to open the contest.
  • Molly Dankowski put a stop to the scoring with a score of her own to make it 6-1.
  • After back-to-back goals from Abby Hormes, Big South Offensive Player of the Year, McKenna Blick netted her first of the game to make it an 8-2 contest.
  • High Point's Mena Loescher and Savanah Paton exchanged goals with 11:50 on the clock, 9-3.
  • With nine minutes on the clock, Olivia Deaver knocked the ball away from Kay Rosselli and passed it to Bianca Tedesco for another Winthrop goal, 11-4.
  • Molly Dankowski scored Winthrop's fifth and last goal of the half, assisted by Tedesco.
  • The Panthers closed out the first 30 minutes with five consecutive goals to take a 17-5 lead after 30 minutes of play.
  • Rachel Foster got the scoring underway out of the half to extend High Point's lead, 18-5.
  • McKenna Blick scored her 31st goal of the season to get Winthrop on the board in the second half.
  • Following another Abby Hormes goal, freshman Ellie Dutton got in on the tournament-scoring action with a score assisted by Lauren Morris.
  • After a seven-minute scoring draught on both sides, the Panthers scored a pair of goals to pull ahead, 21-7.
  • Freshman Grayson McKenzie netted the final goal of the game with four minutes remaining to make it a 21-8 final score in favor of the Panthers.
 
NOTABLES
  • The Eagles have five different goal scorers with McKenna Blick and Molly Dankowski leading the way with two apiece.
  • The Hormes sisters, Abby and Katie, led the game with four and three goals respectively.
  • Co-Defensive Player of the Year, Kimora Bailey, won a team-high five won draw controls.
  • Sara McGuire made eight saves, playing all 60 minutes of the contest.
  • 16 of Winthrop's 18 shots were on goal.
  • Lauren Morris had three assists, a season-high, with Tedesco and Deaver each getting credited with two helpers.
  • Blick finished with 31 goals this season, the second-most in a single season during her collegiate career.
  • Tedesco will finish the season with 42 assists, doubling her previous season-high of 21.
  • This was Winthrop's seventh Big South Conference Tournament appearance and third straight season facing High Point.
