Rock Hill, S.C. — After dropping the first game of the doubleheader 6-4, Winthrop bounced back to take the nightcap 5-2 and clinch the series over USC Upstate, Saturday afternoon on Terry Field.

WHAT HAPPENED
Game 1
- Winthrop grabbed the early lead as Ashley Westbrooks singled up the middle with two outs and Taylor Charlton followed with a homerun to left for a 2-0 lead
- In the third inning, Reema Patel led off with a walk and then stole second
- Bailey Warren followed with a single to left center and Patel came around to score for a 3-0 lead
- The Spartans got two runners aboard in each of the first four innings and finally broke through in the fifth
- After back-to-back singles, Savannah Grigsby hit a three-run homerun to right field to tie the game at 3-3
- After Celeste Delorenzo reached on an error, Peyton Darnell stepped up and hit a two-run homer to right center for a 5-3 advantage
- Trailing 6-3 in the bottom of the sixth, Westbrooks led off the inning with a laser over the fence in center to make it a two-run game but that was as close as the Eagles would get
WHAT HAPPENED
Game 2
- Winthrop grabbed an early lead again as Charlton and Ansley Gilreath led off the inning with back-to-back doubles for a 1-0 lead
- After Madyson Watson singled to center to put runners at the corners, Kaitlyn Tucker laid down a perfect bunt single to load the bases
- Lauren King came through with a single to right, scoring Gilreath for a 2-0 lead
- Vianna Rodriguez lined out to the pitcher followed by a strikeout from Macy McCall
- Bailey Warren hit a grounder to short as Tucker avoided getting hit but was called for interference to end the threat and the inning
- Upstate got two runs back in the top of the fifth inning as Bella Bertot hit a solo homerun to lead off the inning and Sarah Price drove in a run on a sacrifice fly
- That was all Watson would allow as she finished the game with a 1-2-3 seventh to toss another complete game allowing just two runs on six hits with no walks and three strikeouts
EXTRA BASES
- Gilreath finished the weekend series going 5-for-10 at the plate against Upstate
- Warren finished the weekend series with a team-high four RBI, which included the walk-off RBI single in the opening game
- Gilreath moved into 18th on Winthrop's all-time hit list on Saturday with 161 and moved up to 17th on the doubles list with 25
- Westbrooks moved into a tie for 4th all-time in career RBI with 130 (now 15 back of the career leader)
- Westbrooks now has 198 career hits, which ranks 8th all-time and is looking to become the 8th player in program history with 200 career hits
- With her homerun in the first game of the doubleheader, Charlton tied Jenny Scrymgeour for the most homeruns by a true catcher in program history with 14 in a career
- Watson moved into a tie for 7th all-time in career wins with 43
