MACON, G.A. – Despite an early lead and a late comeback, Winthrop came up short against Mercer Tuesday evening, falling 17-14.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Eagles jumped out to a quick 5-0 lead over the Bears, with Molly Dankowski, former Mercer Bear, finding the back of the net three of those times
- Winthrop's streak was snapped by an Erin Degnan free-position goal at the 18:03 mark
- McKenna Blick would get on the board with her 10th of the season to go up 6-1
- Eva Thorn and Degnan would go back-to-back to make it a three-goal game, 6-3
- The Bears tied things up at six when Maddi Koury found the back of the net at the 6:24 mark.
- An 8-1 run to close out the first half gave Mercer a 9-7 lead at halftime
- The Bears struck first after halftime, when Katie Ryan found the back of the net to extend their lead to three, 10-7.
- Less than 30 seconds later, freshman Maddi Koury scored her third goal of the game and gave Mercer an 11-7 lead.
- Blick would get the Eagles on the board in the second half, cutting Mercer's lead to three, 11-8.
- Back-to-back goals for the Bears put them ahead, 13-8.
- Bianca Tedesco scored her second of the contest at the 20:52 mark to make it a 13-9 contest.
- Lily Morin would find the back of the net back-to-back times, once on a free-position shot, to extend Mercer's lead to six, 15-9.
- The Eagles draw in on Mercer's lead with back-to-back goals for Paton, cutting Mercer's lead to three with nine minutes to play
- Angelo and Tedesco would both find the back of the net before time expired, but Winthrop wasn't able to complete the comeback, falling to Mercer, 17-14
