Eagles Fall Short Against Kennesaw State, 15-14, Saturday Afternoon

ROCK HILL, S.C. - An attempt to tie the game up with two seconds remaining came up short as Winthrop fell to Kennesaw State Saturday afternoon, 15-14. 

GAME RECAP
  • The Owls struck first with a goal by Siena Gore.
  • McKenna Blick responded almost exactly one minute later with a goal of her own, her seventh of the season, to notch things at one apiece. 
  • Back-to-back free position goals for S. Gore put Kennesaw State up 3-2.
  • A 6-2 goal run for the Owls put them ahead, 9-4 with 10:34 to play.
  • It was nearly six minutes before Alyssa Angelo and Blick went back-to-back, slashing KSU's lead to three, 9-6.
  • The Gore twins, Siena and Marisa, exchanged goals to pull ahead, 11-6. 
  • Savanah Paton scored her sixth and seventh goal less than a minute apart to keep chipping away at the Owls' lead, 11-8.
  • S. Gore would find the back of the net one last time in the half as time expired to give her squad a 12-8 lead after 30 minutes of play. 
  • Both teams got off to a slow start before Winthrop went on a 6-1 run to take its first lead of the game, 14-13. 
  • Gore, who was incredible on offense, wouldn't let that last long, throwing down yet another goal to tie things back up at 14. 
  • Alyssa Angelo was fouled on back-to-back shots and failed to convert on either free position attempt to keep things tied at 14. 
  • With 1:03 remaining, KSU's Natalie Welch netting a goal to to a 15-14 lead as time was dwindling down. 
  • With two seconds remaining, McKenna Blick failed to convert on the goal and was hit with a yellow card, giving KSU possession as time expired. 

NOTABLES
  • The Eagles had four players put up a three-goal performance; Blick, Angelo, Paton and Molly Dankowski.
  • KSU's Siena Gore had eight of their 15 goals. 
  • Lauren Asher was dominant on the draw control, winning seven.
  • Asher also had a team-high four ground balls and four caused turnovers.
  • Sara McGuire came in before the end of the first half and made five saves. She was credited with the loss. 
LOOKING AHEAD
The Eagles will travel to Macon, G.A. for their first road trip of the season to take on the Mercer Bears in a midweek matchup on Tuesday, Mar. 9 at 3p.m. These teams met nearly two weeks ago, with Winthrop winning the contest, 14-11.
