Box Score 2 Statesboro, Ga. — Winthrop softball dropped both games of a doubleheader at host Georgia Southern on day one of Eagle Round Robin. Winthrop fell 8-2 in the opener and 3-2 in the nightcap.

WHAT HAPPENED
Game 1
- Ansley Gilreath and Taylor Charlton get back-to-back singles in the top of the second but were stranded
- Georgia Southern loaded the bases in the bottom half of the second, but Madyson Watson worked her way out of a jam to keep the game scorless
- Winthrop struck first in the top of the third Macy McCall ran out a ground ball to second base with one out
- McCall then stole second base, and advanced to third on the errant throw
- Lauren King hit a sac fly to left field to score McCall
- Watson kept it going with a double off the right field fence but was stranded
- Georgia Southern opened up the game with an eight-run fourth inning
- The inning was highlighted by a two-run single by Olivia Creamer in the early going
- Ansley Gilreath took a pitch to right center for her eighth homerun of the season in the top of the sixth
Game 2
- Watson walked with two outs and moved to third after Gilreath doubled off the wall but were stranded after Ashley Westbrooks flied out to second
- For a second straight game the Eagles struck first as King got things started for the Eagles in the third with a single to third base,
- Watson singled to left field and then Gilreath reached on an error by the shortstop to load the bases
- Westbrooks hit a deep ball to right that scored King on the sacrifice fly
- Leading off the top of the fifth, McCall doubled to left field and crossed the plate on a single up the middle from Gilreath for a 2-0 lead
- Top of the sixth the Eagles had a chance to add to their lead as freshman Kaitlyn Tucker drew a lead-off walk
- Tucker moved to second on a sacrifice bunt from Vianna Rodriguez and took third on a wild pitch
- McCall tried to score on a wild pitch but was out at the plate to keep it a two-run game
- An RBI single by Bailee Wilson and an RBI groundout by Janai Conklin tied the game for Georgia Southern in the xith
- Reema Patel gave the Eagles an opportunity to break the tie with a leadoff walk in the seventh
- Patel moved to second on a wild pitch and then McCall walked
- King popped up an attempt to sacrifice the runners to second and third
- Watson was out on an infield fly while Westbrooks tried to poke one in shallow right field, but the right fielder made a tumbling catch to finish the inning
- Lead-off batter for Georgia Southern ended the game with a walk-off homerun by pinch-hitter Alia Booth
EXTRA BASES
- McCall has extended her streak to 14 straight games of reaching base
- Gilreath is the first Eagle to hit eight homeruns in the first 15 games of a season
- Gilreath is now just five homeruns away from tying the career mark of 33 set by Chelsea Schoenfeldt
- Westbrooks moved within three RBI of tying Lisa Kingsmore for 6th all-time in program history (115)
