Men's Soccer Hosts Gardner-Webb Wednesday Evening In Final Home Contest

Rock Hill, S.C.— Coming off a heartbreaking loss on Monday afternoon the Winthrop men's soccer team has a quick turnaround when it hosts Gardner-Webb Wednesday night in its final home game of the season.

SERIES HISTORY AGAINST GARDNER-WEBB
Winthrop and Gardner-Webb  for the 26th time. The last time these two teams met in 2019 they played 110 minutes as the game ended in a 1-1 draw. Winthrop scored in the 57th minute while the Runnin' Bulldogs forced overtime with a goal in the 87th minute. The last time Gardner-Webb came to Eagle Field it earned a 4-1 win over Winthrop. In the last five meetings with the Runnin' Bulldogs, Winthrop is 2-2-1. Winthrop is 10-2 all-time at home against Gardner-Webb. Of the 22 meetings all-time that didn't end in a draw, 12 of them have been decided by a goal.
 
A GLANCE AT WINTHROP
Winthrop is coming off a tough home loss to Longwood on Sunday afternoon. Winthrop had drawn even in the 88th minute only to have the Lancers score in the 89th minute off a free kick. Eagles will have to turn the page quickly as they face the Runnin' Bulldogs in just over 48 hours since the loss to Longwood. Freshman Grayson Woodard scored his third goal of the season, which leads the team.
It's senior night for the Eagles as they'll honor Andreas Jackson, Conor Maher, George Orfanidis and Michael Smith prior to kickoff. This group has combined to play in 170 games over the course of their Winthrop careers.
 
BIG SOUTH PRESEASON POLL
The Eagles were voted 7th in the 2020-21 Big South Conference preseason poll. Campbell is the preseason favorite receiving five first-place votes while High Point is second, just six votes behind. Gardner-Webb was voted third followed by Presbyterian College, USC Upstate, Winthrop, Radford and UNC Asheville.
 
WHAT'S AHEAD
Next up for the Eagles will be a non-conference matchup on Friday, Apr. 2 at 7 p.m. as they travel to Greenville, SC to take on Furman.

SPECTATOR POLICY
Admission is free for the 2020-21 season and spectators are allowed to attend contests. All patrons that enter the facility must wear a mask the entire time in accordance with Winthrop University policies and procedures. We also ask that fans adhere to the university social distancing guidelines. NO spectators are allowed to enter the field of play at ANY time. Spectators must remain on the side of the field across from the team benches as the opposite side of the field is closed to the public. When the contest has concluded we ask that all fans exit the facility immediately.
