Rock Hill, S.C. — The Winthrop softball team fell 6-4 against Longwood in extra innings, Sunday afternoon at Terry Field.

WHAT HAPPENED
- With 17 mph winds swirling around Terry Field for much of the afternoon it made for some interesting defensive plays starting with Vianna Rodriguez in the top of the first with a diving to catch on a fly ball caught up in the wind
- Taylor Charlton got the Eagles ahead in the second with a solo homerun to left field with two outs
- Lancers jumped on top in the fourth scoring three runs on a pair of homeruns from Alexis Wayland and Madison Blair
- Some hope for the Eagles in the bottom of the fourth when Ashley Westbrooks doubled to left center advancing to third on a single from Ansley Gilreath
- Reema Patel came in to pinch run for Gilreath and was caught stealing second base for the second out and then Madyson Watson grounded out to the pitcher
- Lancer's Mason Basdikis reached base after getting hit and stole second with two outs
- Pinch-hitter Kelly Park came through with a single to center to score Basdikis for a 4-1 lead
- Eagles came to the seventh trailing by three runs and Gilreath led off with a single, but was caught stealing
- Watson followed with a double and then moved to third on a wild pitch
- After Charlton walked to put runners at the corners, Chloe Baker came in to pinch-hit and drove in Watson with a sacrifice fly to center
- Vianna Rodriguez reached base after she was hi and then pinch-hitter Kaitlyn Tucker drew a walk to load the bases
- Macy McCall stepped up to the plate and drove a ball up the middle to plate Charlton to make it a one run game
- A wild pitch by Sydney Backstrom advanced the runners as Rodriguez came across to tie the game and force an extra innings
- A pair of singles put runners at the corners with one out for Longwood in the eighth inning
- After Watson got a strikeout for the second out, Sydney Jacobsen hit a double in deep center that scored both runners for a 6-4 lead
EXTRA BASES
- McCall moved past Janiva Willis for the second-best streak of reaching base at 31 games and now trails Lisa Kingsmore by 7 games for the all-time single-season mark (38)
- Ansley Gilreath had her 12th multi-hit game of the season and became the 23rd player in program history to reach 150 career hits
- Gilreath also moved into a tie with Lisa Kingsmore for 5th all-time in career walks with 67
- Ashley Westbrooks moved into 12th all-time in career hits (188) and moved into a tie for 7th all-time in doubles (38) with Laura Hill
- Watson had nine strikeouts in the loss and now has eight games on the year with nine or more as she's moved within six of 400 in her career
- Tucker now has a streak of six games straight of reaching base, which is the second-best current streak on the team and 5th best overall
- In the series between Longwood and Winthrop, 14 of the last 15 meetings have been decided by two runs or less
