Eagles Host Longwood In Weekend Series

Rock Hill, S.C.— Winthrop welcomes defending Big South Conference Champion Longwood to Terry Field Mar. 27-28 for a three-game Big South Conference softball series. The series will begin with a doubleheader on Saturday, Mar. 27 and the series will wrap-up with a single game on Sunday, Mar. 28.

SERIES HISTORY WITH LONGWOOD
  • Winthrop and Longwood last met in the 2019 Big South Conference Title Game
  • Winthrop forced an if necessary game before falling 3-2
  • In recent years this series has been very tight with 11 of the last 12 meetings decided by two runs or less and seven of them by a single run
  • Eagles and Lancers have met 30 times with Longwood leading the series 19-11
  • Longwood has taken the last two series 2-1 with the last series by the Eagles coming in 2017 with as sweep at home

  • Eagles are coming off a split doubleheader at home against Gardner-Webb on Tuesday
  • Winthrop has the second best scoring offense in the league at 4.5 runs per game and the third best team batting average (.258)
  • Lead the Big South in homeruns (31), walks (89) and batters struck out (191)
  • Macy McCall (.430) and Ansley Gilreath (.413) are first and second in the Big South for batting average
  • Gilreath and McCall are the only hitters in the league batting .400 or better
  • Gilreath leads the conference in hits, homeruns, RBI, total bases, and slugging percentage
  • McCall leads the conference in runs scored, on-base percentage and stolen bases
  • McCall has reached base in all 28 games and is closing in on the 2nd best streak in program history for consecutive games reaching base
  • Madyson Watson is third in the league in total wins (7) and leads the league in strikeouts (119) and strikeouts per game (9.54)
  • In the first game of the doubleheader win over Gardner-Webb, Watson tossed a no-hitter allowing just one walk and struck out seven for her 7th win
  • Watson has thrown nine complete games in 10 starts on the year and has 19 appearances overall
  • Eagles are 6-3 at home this season and averaging 5.5 runs per game
  • In the nine home games the Eagles have outscored their opponents 50-17
HEAD COACH WINDY THEES
  • Head coach Windy Thees is in her third season at Winthrop and in her 17th season as head coach of a collegiate softball program
  • Spent five seasons at Georgia State & College compiling a 163-92 record followed by six years at Memphis (172-151) and three seasons at Ole Miss (69-94)
  • In her 17 seasons she's compiled an overall record of 460-387 and a record of 297-295 at the helm of a D1 program
  • Led Ole Miss to five wins over nationally-ranked opponents that included a 2-0 victory at #1 Florida in 2014
  • In 2003 she led Georgia State & College to a runner-up finish in the Division II National Championship
  • Thees was a four-year starter at Florida State as both a catcher and second baseman
RECORD BOOK WATCH
  • Westbrooks now has 124 career RBI, which is 6th on the all-time list and two back from 5th place
  • She needs 21 to become the all-time leader in RBI at Winthrop
  • Gilreath now has 109 career RBI, which ranks 9th all-time
  • Gilreath moved into 2nd on the all-time homerun list with 32 while Westbrooks is now all alone in 5th  with 24 after her homerun on Tuesday
  • With 65 career walks, Gilreath ranks 6th all-time
  • Westbrooks has 58 career walks and is now tied for 10th all-time
  • Westbrooks is 13th on the all-time hit list with 186 and 10 hits away from cracking the Top 10
  • Westbrooks is also moving up the ranks in doubles with 37 in her career, which is 8th
  • Watson broke into the program's Top 10 for career wins and reached 300 career strikeouts in the win over Furman
  • Watson is now 8th all-time in strikeouts and became the 10th player in program history to record 300 strikeouts in a career
  • Her 380 career strikeouts put her 7th all-time (37 away from 6th)

Winthrop stays with league competition and gets a chance to take the series against Gardner-Webb on Wednesday, Mar. 31 at 6 p.m. on Terry Field to end a six-game home stand.
