Eagles Fall To High Point Wednesday Night

Rock Hill, S.C. — Winthrop men's soccer suffered a 3-0 loss to High Point, Wednesday evening at Eagle Field in Big South Conference men's soccer action.

Game Recap
  • Michael Smith tested High Point goalkeeper Trent Holden in the first minute as his shot from just outside the 18 was to the lower right corner but Holden was down for the save
  • In the 37th minute, M.D. Myers just missed giving the Panthers the lead as he made a run near post and the ball was delivered on his foot as he struck it first time just low and wide right of the post
  • The game was scoreless at the half with High Point holding a 4-1 edge in shots
  • Both teams were getting the ball forward and delivering balls into the box but neither team with much luck connecting
  • High Point broke through in the 69th minute when a cross by M.D. Myers was flicked on by Caco Fernandez in front of goal to Alex Abril at the back post who placed a shot into the net
  • In the 75th minute, Sebastian Chalbaud's free kick from outside the box to the right of goal curled into the top right corner for a 2-0 lead for the Panthers
  • In the 85th minute Allessandro Sobacchi took a pass from Myers, struck a low shot from outside the box that was deflected off a diving Dean DePinto and the ball snuck into the right side of the goal for a 3-0 lead

Winthrop remains at home for its next contest when it hosts Gardner-Webb at 6 p.m. on Sunday, Mar. 21.
