Macon, Ga. — The Winthrop softball team squared off with Western Carolina for its final non-conference matchup before diving into Big South Conference action this coming week. Winthrop suffered a 6-4 loss Sunday afternoon on the final day of the Mercer Bears Classic.

WHAT HAPPENED
- Aisha Weixlmann had a strong first two innings getting four batters to go down swinging but the Catamounts broke through in the third
- Western Carolina took advantage of a pair of free bases as a Twitty single brough home a run in the top of the third
- A Western Carolina grand slam off the bat of McNeil in the top of the fourth increased the lead to 5-0
- Parker doubled to lead off the inning and with one out the Catamounts drew back-to-back walks to load the bases
- The Eagles did respond quickly with two runs in the bottom of the fifth as Macy McCall hit a two-run homer down the right field line
- Quick to answer back, Western Carolina's Perillo hit a lead-off solo homerun making the score 6-2
- For the fourth time this weekend Taylor Charlton sent one over the fence with a two-run shot in the bottom of the sixth
EXTRA BASES
- McCall has extended her streak to 23 straight games of reaching base
- That is the longest stretch of reaching base by an Eagle since Lisa Kingsmore reached in 25 straight in 2008
- Kingsmore holds the record with 38 straight games followed by Janiva Willis at 30 in a row
- Charlton finished the weekend with five runs, four homeruns and eight RBI

The Eagles will kick off Big South league action Mar. 19-20 at Campbell. The series will begin with a doubleheader on Friday at 4 p.m. and the series will wrap-up on Saturday with a single-game at 1 p.m.
