Macon, GA — The Winthrop softball team earned a split on day two of the Mercer Bears Classic after falling to Southern Miss 7-4 and bouncing back to defeat Mercer 8-6.

WHAT HAPPENED
vs Southern Miss
- Golden Eagles came out swinging as Destini Brown led off the game with an inside the park homerun
- The Eagles came back to take the lead in the second inning as Ashley Westbrooks got things going by reaching base on an error to lead off
- Kaitlyn Tucker reached after getting hit was thrown out at second on a fielder's choice to put Ashton Vannhouse on first as Westbrooks moved to third
- Vanhouse stole second to get two runners in scoring position and Macy McCall came through as both scored on a single through the right side for a 2-1 lead
- Madyson Watson came through again with her second hit of the game that plated McCall to give the Eagles the lead 3-1
- After giving up the leadoff homerun, Watson did a good job containing the Golden Eagles through the fifth holding them to just two hits and striking out seven
- The Golden Eagles made it a one run game in the top of the sixth as Brown tripled and then scored on an Alyssa Davis double to left field
- Mackenzie Smith then took over the circle striking out her first batter for the second out and ending the inning on a ground out as Kaitlyn Tucker made a nice diving play and throw to first to get the final out
- Westbrooks reached on an error to lead off the sixth inning and Tucker followed with a single through the right side
- After a itching change, Chloe Baker hit into a double play, but McCall came through with two outs with a single that scored Westbrooks for a 4-2 lead
- Southern Miss scored five runs in the top of the seventh to rally for the win
- The inning was highlighted by an RBI single from Natalie Hurdle and two-run single by Davis
at Mercer
- Mercer struck early as Allie Jones singled with two outs to score Micayla Rood after she doubled with one out
- The Bears kept things going scoring another three runs off four hits in the second inning
- Mercer had three straight hits that scored runs as Tori Ash singled followed by an RBI triple from Elisa Rosado and Rood singled for a 4-0 lead
- The Eagles couldn't get the bats going until the fifth (sent no more than 3 batters to the plate in each of the first four innings)
- Ansley Gilreath led off with a single to right center as Rema Patel came in to pinch-run and scored on a shot off the wall from Bailey Warren
- Mercer came right back with two more runs to push its lead to 6-1 as Castleberry drove in a run on a sacrifice fly and Jones scored Rood with a single to center
- Breaking through in the fifth inning seemed to wake up the Winthrop bats as McCall walked with one out and then stole second only to have Lauren King hit a two run homer down the left field line
- Watson followed with a with a solo homer to bring the score to 6-4
- Keeping the momentum going Gilreath doubled to left center followed by a Westbrooks single to put runners at the corners
- After Tucker popped out, Warren reached on a fielding error by that put Warren on first and Westbrooks on second as Gilreath scored to make it a one-run game
- Taylor Charlton came in to pinch-hit for Vianna Rodriguez and came through with the long ball over the center field fence as the Eagles led 8-6
- Mackenzie Cyzick got the Bears 1-2-3 in the sixth and worked around two singles in the seventh to hold on for the win
EXTRA BASES
- McCall's hitting streak came to an end at 13 games, but she extended her streak to 22 straight games of reaching base
- Gilreath moved into a tie for 25th on the Winthrop all-time hit list with 145
- Westbrooks is now all alone at 13th for all-time hits (183) and is tied for 11th all-time in career runs (111)
- Watson, who hit seven homeruns in her career before the 2021 season now has eight on the year and 13 all-time (tied for 21st most in a career by an Eagle)

The Eagles will finish out the Mercer Bear Classic Sunday afternoon taking on Western Carolina at 1:30 pm before heading into conference play next weekend.
