Eagles Fall To Radford Friday Night, 72-46

ROCK HILL, S.C. – Winthrop women's basketball had its three-game win streak snapped by Radford Friday night, dropping Game 1, 72-46.

The Eagles struggled from behind-the-arc, missing all 15 attempts. This is the team's first game without a 3-pointer since March 9, 2017. The Eagles were led by Myra Strickland who totaled 13 points, her third consecutive double-digit game. Tori Hall also finished in double-figures with 11 of her own.

HOW IT HAPPENED
 
FIRST QUARTER
  • The Eagles jumped out to a 6-2 lead behind buckets from Maleeah Langstaff, Sydney Hunter and Madison Ervin
  • 7-0 run for the Highlanders gave them a 9-6 edge
  • Tori Hall checks in, gets fouled on her shot and makes the free throw to tie the game at nine with 5:01 to play
  • Destinee Marshall drained a shot from deep to take a 12-9 lead
  • Tori Hall hit a corner jumper with 45 seconds on the clock to cut Radford's lead to one point after 10 minutes of play, 12-11
 
SECOND QUARTER 
  • Myra Strickland started the scoring in the second 10 minutes of play to give Winthrop a one-point edge, 13-12
  • Radford scored back-to-back layups to regain a three-point lead, 16-13
  • Sierra Hunter tied the contest at 16 with a layup and made free throw after getting fouled by Rachel LaLonde.
  • Radford's Ariel Williams had the team's last six points to close out the half.
  • With three seconds remaining in the half, Myra Strickland sank two free throws to keep it a one possession game at halftime, 26-23 in favor of the visitors.
 
THIRD QUARTER
  • The Highlanders opened the half with a 9-0 run to take a 12-point lead, 35-23
  • Myra Strickland snapped their run with a jumper to get Winthrop on the board in the second half, 35-25, with 6:15 on the clock.
  • Myra Strickland capitalized off an Ashley Tudor turnover at the 3:31 mark, getting fouled on her jumper and making the free throw to cut Radford's lead to single-digits, 40-32
  • The Eagles were outscored 9-4 to close out the quarter and trailed by 13 with 10 minutes to play, 49-36

     

    FOURTH QUARTER
  • Tori Hall got Winthrop on the board in the fourth with a jumper 20 seconds into the quarter
  • Radford's Tina Lindenfeld and Makaila Wilson hit back-to-back 3-pointers to take a 17-point lead, 55-38
  • The Highlanders went on an 11-2 run to take a 24-point lead
  • Myra Strickland and Tori Hall hit back-to-back baskets to stop Radford's run, cutting their lead to 66-46
  • The Highlanders held Winthrop scoreless the last two minutes of the contest, putting up six points in that time to seal the deal.
 
THE NUMBERS
  • The Eagles were out rebounded by the Highlanders, 37-33
  • Winthrop did a good job protecting the ball, turning the ball over just nine times, resulting in eight points for Radford
  • Radford committed 16 turnovers, resulting in 15 points for the Eagles
  • 25 of Winthrop's 46 points were scored off the bench, led by sophomore Tori Hall with 11
  • The Highlanders finished the contest shooting 62 percent from the field, 37 percent from 3-point range and 58 percent from the free throw line
  • Winthrop struggled this evening, shooting 28 percent from the field, making no 3-pointers and finishing 67 percent from the charity stripe
  • In tonight's game, Anika Riley moved into 9th on the all-time rebounds list with 714 in her career. She is currently tied with Jennifer Churchill (1995-99)
