Riley Records Double-Double In Eagles Overtime Win Saturday Night

ROCK HILL, S.C. – Winthrop women's basketball is back in the win column after a big overtime win on Saturday night over the Highlanders, 63-59. The Eagles were led by Anika Riley, who tallied a 15-point, 10-rebound double-double. She moved into 8th place on the all-time rebounds list with 724 in her career. Madison Ervin and Myra Strickland chipped in 13 and 11 points respectively in the win.

HOW IT HAPPENED
 
FIRST QUARTER
  • Both teams struggled out of the gate, remaining scoreless until the 7:43 mark when Madison Ervin got the Eagles on the board.
  • The Eagles held Radford scoreless until Ashley Tudor got them on the board with 5:14 on the clock
  • Winthrop opened the game on a 6-2 run.
  • The Highlanders took their first lead of the night off a Destinee Marshall jumper, 7-6
  • J'Mani Ingram sank a layup with 14 seconds remaining in the quarter to give the Eagles a one-point edge after 10 minutes of play, 13-12.
 
SECOND QUARTER 
  • Highlanders came out hot, going on a 9-0 run to take a 21-13 lead.
  • Anika Riley got the Eagles on the board at the 7:10 mark to end Radford's streak
  • Sierra Hunter made it a four point game with a layup with 5:15 on the clock, 23-19
  • Another 9-0 run for the visitors quickly made it a 13-point game, 32-19
  • Winthrop ended the half on a 7-0 run to make it a six point game after 20 minutes of play. Radford led, 32-36 at halftime.
 
THIRD QUARTER
  • Myra Strickland opened the third-quarter scoring with two made free throws to make it a 32-28 contest
  • Anika Riley was fouled on her basket and made her free throw, keeping it a four point game, 36-32
  • J'Mani Ingram hit a jumper to make it a 38-34 game in favor of Radford
  • The Highlanders ended the third quarter on an 8-3 run
  • Radford's Kyanna Morgan hit a huge shot from behind-the-arc at the buzzer to take an eight point lead into the final 10 minutes,46-38
     
FOURTH QUARTER
  • Maleeah Langstaff opened the fourth-quarter scoring with a jumper 40 seconds into the action, 46-40 Radford
  • An 8-0 run for Winthrop tied the game at 48 with 5:10 left in regulation
  • With 30 seconds remaining in the game, Anika Riley sank a jumper to make it a 56-55 game in favor of Radford
  • Radford's Makaila Wilson missed her free throws and despite getting the ball back, Winthrop couldn't capitalize, missing a layup at the other end
  • Sydney Hunter was fouled and made 1-of-2 free throw attempts tying the game at 56 with 19 seconds to play
  • Bryonna McClean's two-point attempt as time expired was no good, forcing overtime

OVERTIME
  • Myra Strickland struck fast, giving Winthrop a two-point edge early in overtime, 58-56
  • Seconds later, Radford's Tina Lindenfeld tied it up at 58
  • Rachel LaLonde was fouled, making 1-of-2 free throw attempts to take a 59-58 lead
  • Maleaah Langstaff was next at the line, making 1-of-2 free throws to tie the game once again, this time at 59
  • Anika Riley was sent to the line after being fouled by Lindenfeld and she made 1-of-2 shots, Winthrop took a 61-59 lead
  • Madison Ervin secured the OT win with two made free throws with  seven seconds remaining in the contest.

THE NUMBERS
  • Winthrop won the battle of the boards, 44-35
  • The Eagles turned the ball over 16 times, resulting in 10 points for the Highlanders
  • Radford turned the ball of 19 times, resulting in 19 points for Winthrop
  • Winthrop had 13 bench points in the win, led by J'Mani Ingram who contributed nine
  • The Eagles shot 35 percent from the field, 10 percent from 3-point range and 65 percent from the free throw line
  • The Highlanders finished the contest shooting 38 percent from the field, 24 percent from 3-point range and 67 percent from free throw line
  • This is Winthrop's first overtime win since defeating Longwood 69-60 on Jan. 30, 2018
 
  UP NEXT
The Eagles are scheduled to travel to Boiling Springs to take on the Runnin' Bulldogs on Feb. 12-13. That series was originally scheduled for Feb.5-6 but had to be postponed.   Winthrop dropped both games to Gardner-Webb in 2019-20, falling 71-59 in Game 1 and 54-49 in Game 2. The Runnin' Bulldogs have secured a win in nine of the last 10 matchups and hold a 21-10 all-time record lead.
